Hello!

Any tips on how to wean from a bottle to a cup? Hi, was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to how to get my 18 month old to drink out of a cup instead of a bottle. I have been trying since he was 6 months but he just absolutely refuses it. I have another baby due in April and want the bottles gone before then. Any advice at all would be gladly appreciated. Thanks :)

  • There are so many amazing products to make this transition now.
We began with sippy cup during the day, bottle for night.
Soon we were able to move to a straw cup (cup with built in straw) during the day & sippy cup at night. (Of course the sippy cup is just for sipping during the night, don’t let your little one actually lay down with it.)
Now we’re the straw cup during the day & at night.
I personally don’t like leaving cups with drink in them out at night, (bugs, spiders, etc) so I am happy to be woken up for a drink but most nights my child happily sleeps through.
    Hope this helps.
& congratulations on your expectant new arrival & best of luck.

  • Such good answers! There really interesting comments on this!

  • I am still struggling with this with my 17 month old. It is not about the milk in the bottle, it is about the teat on the bottle. We have started to take it away at childcare. One step at a time.

  • I’m having a similar challenge. My 20 month old will drink water out of any vessel but he refuses to drink milk from anything but a bottle. He gags if I try to make him drink it. And then he watches me pour the same milk from a cup into his bottle and he’ll happily down it. I don’t get it!

  • During the day after a meal get them to drink out of a soppy cup so they get used to it:)

  • let him play with cups in the bath no doubt it will end up in the mouth.

  • Hopefully all went well, I went with the theory that if my daughter was thirsty she’d drink out of the cup

  • How did you end up going ?

  • How did he go with bottle to cup?

  • Sucking from a straw can be a bit difficult at first, so get the spout ones without straws to begin with.

  • I hope that you got him to a cup before the bub came.

  • I hope you managed to get him to drink out of a cup. Its best to introduce water first. If you start giving cordial or flavoured milk they will come to expect that and it makes it harder to introduce water.

  • U could always put something nice tasting in it! Add flavour

  • Start giving a sippy cup of water with meals. I found the soft spouted ones the best.

  • Encourage by saying he will b a big boy if he drinks out a cup!

  • I am in the process of weaning my son at the moment. He still has bottles first thing in the morning and at night, but we now give him his sippy cup with meals and during the day. I plan on weaning him off fully when he reaches 1 year

  • Avent do some bottles with the sippy cup top maybe change the top but the bottle will still look the same, might help.

  • Oh and make sure it is a tilt sippy cup not one with a straw

  • Have a cup there at meal times and no bottle – have one for yourself as well and try to make a game out of drinking from it

  • Let him choose the cup he would like, maybe a character one, and let him play with it for awhile….he’ll come to you before too long asking you to fill it up.
