You can buy these green biscuits that clean their teeth when they chew them. I’d get the vet to check them in case there are any abyss or rotting teeth
I would take him to the vet for a full, professional clean but then ask for tips on how to clean his teeth at home. You can buy dental chews that help remove tartar build up but I suspect that there’s only so much that you can do to help.
If it’s tartar build up, the vet is the best option. If you’ve tried chew things like bones and Pedigree Dentastix, regular dry food, and his teeth are still bad…..it’s definitely a vet visit, older dogs especially benefit from this
Dental chews specifically for dental hygiene. Chances are your dog isn’t going to start letting you brush their teeth in their twilight years if you have never done it before. Also look at the rest of the diet making sure it is nutritionally complete. Feed a larger sized biscuit for a larger dog making them work harder with their teeth. Add fresh parsley to their meals which aids in making their breath a little less on the nose too.
It has to be the vet if the teeth already look bad as the layers underneath will probably need attention as they may be diseased already. Many dogs need a regular clean at the vet.
First, you need expert advise, bad teeth, first warning sign, older animal, 2nd warning sign, and the fact you are asking here for help, 3rd warning sign. We have been dog breeders and trainers/showing when my mum started 40 years ago, so the best advise here is go to your vet first. If the teeth are bad, you could really harm your pet more by not seeking expert advise to ensure there are no underlying problems, not just unclean teeth. Disease and damage have to be…MUST be treated first, to ensure these are not issues, then as other answers here have stated, dog teeth cleaning food, chews and home cleaning treatments will maintain, but for heavens sake, go to a vet first, please.
If there is already a plaque build up then the vets are the only ones that can help. Bones will help keep them clean once the vets have removed the plaque
