Hello!

Could you please ask the NSW mums when they knew their child was ready for school? What signs did they look out for?

  • I just realised I answered this question a couple of years ago. How time flies 🙂

  • I think you can tell by how the child behaves at pre-school. Does the child get along well with other children? Are they able to follow the teacher’s instructions? Are they eager to learn new things?

  • What have you decided about school?

  • Have a chat to the kindy teachers 🙂

  • I think having watched them through other stages like playgroup and kindy are good indicators.

  • I think as a mum you just know – and kindy teachers are always helpful too.

  • Have you decided as to whether your child is ready for school?

  • Did you find out if your child is ready for school?

  • I do hope you have found some helpful suggestions here.

  • Kinder teachers are usually the best ones to ask. But as a parent you do sort of know – if they are keen to learn, social skills are good etc.

  • I think sometimes it is when they seem to need a lot more to keep them occupied. I think if they are the right age, and know how to use a toilet, then the rest will take care of itself at school. If they haven’t been taught how to count, don’t worry, they will pick that up very fast-my son could count to 3 and sometimes 4, he did not know the alphabet, and as soon as he started prep he learnt them really fast.

  • Unfortunately I am no anywhere near there 🙁

  • ask the school you will send them to what they would like the children to be able to achieve before going.

  • To prepare your child do lots of exercises like alphabet, read stories and ask sone basic comprehension to see if he/ she understands. I knew my son was ready with the questions he would ask. My childcare also told me that he was fine for prep

  • Reading through all these answers now as I’m in the same boat. Lots of signs point to my daughter being ready for school but I’m a little worried that she can’t write her name yet, and whenever I try to teach her she just doesn’t seem interested.

  • I kept my son back a year. I am glad I did, he wasn’t ready emotionally.

  • I thknk its an individual thing with every child.

  • When they are getting bored at home and can write their name and some numbers and letters.See how they interact with other children as well

  • Check out a list of things to look for here and also ask Pre School teachers about your child’s readiness. http://www.kids-first.com.au/files//downloadable_parent_resources/school_readiness_checklist.pdf

  • I am in NSW and have a 4 year old boy with a June Birthday so I am asking the same question myself. I’ve googled an online checklist for school readiness and it’s very helpful. Try http://www.kids-first.com.au/article/school-readiness-checklist or http://www.kids-first.com.au/files//downloadable_parent_resources/school_readiness_checklist.pdf
I would also ask the Pre School teachers what they think.
