Hello!

I know people that set goals and achieve them but I seem to lose my way all the time. Can anyone offer tips or methods that work for them to help them stay on track to achieve their goals?

  • I know you asked this question a while ago, but… Have you tried breaking big goals down into smaller ones and celebrating each achievement?

  • I am a big believer in writing my goals down and breaking them into small achievable steps. Ie no point saying “I’ll save a house deposit” what does that look like for you? Is it save $50 a week. Spend less on takeaway etc.

  • If possible, I break them up into smaller steps or goals, so I can tick those off on the way to the bigger one.

  • Start by setting small, achievable goals. If you set them too high and don’t achieve them, it will dishearten you for future attempts

  • Great question!! I would also love any tips and handy hints. Appreciated muchly! My goals haven’t been achieved in a long time!!

  • Good question. Set yourself new goals. Even if they are tiny steps. Easy wins can keep you motivated.

  • Keep your goals visible! A chart near the front door, a money jar with benchmarks notched up the side, a calendar that you document goal dates. Something you can look at and update daily is more likely to keep your attention.

  • Write down your goals into small steps and review weekly and monthly; you have to keep on top of them. Break down the steps to achieve them and tick each step off; it feels good to tick them off. I use a pretty book with a goal on each page and decorate the page and list the steps. It really does help! Good Luck!

  • well try to keep busy and exercise that will power. talk to anyone else involved in spending money and advise them of your goal and tips to not make you want to spend

  • Im very much the same go in with great ambition but lose the dedication whether its loosing weight, saving money, keeping bookwork up to date/time management, i too need to use some of these tips to improve my family life

  • Change a password that you have to use regularly to something related to your goal, that way you’re constantly reminding yourself.

  • Review your goals regularly

  • I know this question is a little old, but thought I would reply anyway. In addition to what has been suggested, my advice would be to find a friend/family member who you can share your goals with so that you have some accountability to someone else. Someone who can check in on your progress and be encouraging without being judgemental. Knowing that someone is going to ask “How are you going with (goal)?” can keep you motivated.

  • Thanks for asking this – I have the same problem with maintaining focus on my goals. I will try some of these tips.

  • Make your goals SMART – Small, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time set goals. Take a big goal and break it down into small chunks that you can see how you are achieving and going along on your journey.

  • I write goals of what I want to achieve and then write up a budget and adjust where I need to. I will only withdraw a small amount of cash from the ATM and then try and make that last the fortnight. Everything else stays in the bank. I keep a diary too of what I spend and also if I was really serious about saving look at my shopping habits and how I can best save money.

  • You should keep a diary or notebook outining each day. Remember to think of your goal and be positive in thinking that you will reach it one day. Every day will be one day closer to your goal – if it is saving for something, losing weight etc.

  • When saving for small items I like to put a picture of what I’m saving for on a tin/box/carton and put cash in there towards it.
Larger items are a bit more tricky. Perhaps speak to your bank about setting up and automatic transfer into an account that you’re not able to access.
    Good luck!

  • Oops, I’ve just realised I said basically the same thing as the first mum.

  • Set your goal and then write down the steps you need to attain that goal, that way you are taking smaller achievable steps to get their, just a thought.
