  • Its generally a good idea to water your orchid every 7 to 11 days, or more specifically, when the mix the orchid is contained in gets dry. Too much watering can damage your plant and is the most common reason your orchid will die.

  • I inherited my father in laws orchids – about 10 pots of them. I’ve given them hardly any care and they are starting to bid up to flower again. Mine are outside, semi shaded under a tree. I water during summer but that’s all.

  • once a week i sit mine in the sink and drench it with water then let it drain.

  • I don’t do any gardening but my parents do and they have massive orchids which they swap with other orchid collectors.
They only water them around once a week and give them a bit of an extra sprits when it’s hotter then normal.

  • I find that the ones I neglect are the ones that do better, so no real helpful advice from me, sorry.

  • All very handy answers to take on board.Thank- you!

  • Once a week in summer once a fortnight in winter-soak for 30mins in the sink…

  • Also; a chat with a helpful staff member at a garden nursery about orchids might be helpful. I love getting helpful advice from our local nurseries on the garden and particular plants.

  • I’m afraid I haven’t done well with Orchids and lost them and yet someone I knew had them out in the sun they were pot bound neglected and survived. Everyone gave me different advice so step slowly.

  • I have a spray bottle that I use too lightly spray my orchids every day or two.

  • My mum is watering hers once a week.

  • they don’t need too much watering. I would say once a week in summer/spring or if in winter it doesn’t rain for a week.

  • The ones that flower the most for me at re literally under a tree in my back yard and I don’t touch them haha

  • I have heard that growing orchids takes care and maybe investing in a book orchids would be helpful? There might even be some good online sites on orchids? Orchids are quite beautiful!

  • While each growing environment is unique, and watering habits vary from person to person, it is generally a good idea to water about once per 7-10 days, when the mix gets dry. Too much watering leads to root rot, crown rot and other over watering problems like fungus gnat infestations.
The best place to water your plant is in the kitchen sink. Use lukewarm water (do not use salt softened or distilled water) and water your plant for about 15 seconds and be sure to thoroughly wet the media. Then allow the plant to drain for about 15 minutes. It may appear dry but it has had enough water.

  • Once a week!
