My kitty is stubborn and so telling her NO worked only for a short time. We have had to use a water bottle and spray her a few times and everytime she’d jump up. She got the message after a couple of times and doesn’t do it anymore
My mother had this problem with her new best friend.
We used the spray bottle of water trick & it took some time but did work.
It doesn’t harm your furry friend and will save your benches.
Also make sure you keep all kitty food, milk & toys away from benches so it won’t draw your furry friends attention to your benches.
Enjoy your new family member.
Put some tin foil spread out on the bench. When the cat jumps on it the tin will make a noise that frightens the cat. You will probably need to leave it up there a week or two for it to get the point but at least its something you can still do if you are not there to squirt it with something
place some naphthalene flakes in a small cloth (closed pocket type) and place on chair or bench, cats don’t like the smell. I place around fence area of my property to keep neighbours cats out and it works well
A spray bottle with a little vinegar in it. When the kitty jumps up give them a quick squirt – cats hate that! This is also a good device to use for ANY bad behavior!
I use to run a animal welfare org with a friend and we both worked as vet nurse , I stopped abot 11 years ago and that was in the old house. When we went to move we had 42 cats and decided as they were all desexed they would all come with us when we moved as well had a no kill policy . We just got spray bottles of water and water guns work and if they did this we gave a good spray of water and in a tone tell them no. We did the same when they were same to stop them for backing when their was no need.
Spraying them with water won’t harm them and I never had a problem bathing them if they need on due to water spraying. They will go out in the rain so it will not cause your animal to hate you as you will find in the end you can just hold up an empty bottle and only need to in a tone say no,
When you catch your cat on bench a quick hand clap and say his/her name firmly in an authoritative voice. Don’t spray your cat with water the cat will remember this and lose trust in you. The cat should be shocked and jump down quickly so put him/her out of the room for a few minutes…this has reduced the incidence of it massively for my cat. Good luck!
Cats have a better sense of smell than humans and they dislike Vinegar. If you wipe down your benches with some diluted vinegar it should keep your cat at bay. Good luck.
I was also going to say get a spray bottle we did the same with our dogs if they jumped up at us or the kitchen benches.
Didn’t take them long to understand that they were going to get sprayed each time.
Good luck
