Hello!

Can you suggest ways to store Lego we have tried using a draw string mat but find pieces fall out and not always practical when my son is only looking for a couple of pieces. The mat is great when he wants to spend some time creating different things.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated – thank you

  • The only thing that worked for us was a dedicated corner for Lego. We had a big duffel bag to keep the pieces as there’s nothing quite as painful as stepping on a sharp piece in the middle of the night!

  • I’ve got a big storage container on wheels and think it’s practical.

  • Go to a bargain store and get one of those plastic storage boxes with a lid. It will last a long time .

  • I use giant plastic tubs with lids

  • Some of the cheapie tubs aren’t very strong, nor are their lids Some of them look very strong but with constant use, depending how much weight is put in them, they tend to lose their shape or the lids warp and don’t fit properly.

  • We use a big plastic storage tub, but have some smaller little baskets within the big tub for some pieces to remain sorted when a project is mid-way.

  • Oh thank you Lego head sorter sounds good I will look online – cheers

  • The lego head sorter pretty good as it also sorts the pieces into 3 sizes making construction easier

  • Thank you everyone for your ideas – I dont seem to be able to reply directly to your posts for some reason. Plastic tubes sound like they way to go, my little man is only just starting with Lego but has already accumulated alot! love Trofast system looks great might be worth getting as he starts to get more. Will start with a box under the bed for now.

Thank you all once again – greatly appreciated.

  • Ive tried the drawstring bags too & it just didn’t work for us. I ended up going with storage shelves, but there are heaps of ideas on lego storage on Pinterest !!

  • Get one of those plastic storage tubs that will slide under the bed. These are usually big enough will plenty of room to move pieces about when looking for that certain bit.

  • Definitely tubs. Depending on how your kids play pack them according to size or we pack different sets together. General pieces get their own tub but I also know someone who sorts by color, it’s just not something I could handle though.

  • Depends how much you have and how much you want to spend, the trofast system at IKEA is great as you can pick the size of your drawers and lids, so they can then be sorted by colour or size, a cheaper way would be the clear plastic storage boxes on wheels, Kmart and the Reject shop have a range of sizes, you could get the under bed flat ones and roll them under the bed or stack them, but it all comes down to will the kids use them?

  • It probably depends on the amount of Lego if has but, you could use plastic stackable containers or plastic drawers and divide Lego into colours or block sizes then figures and accessories in another draw.
