  • You will need to start with de-cluttering or else you won’t get anywhere. Once that’s done, there are a few ideas that will help organise things in each room. Little portable shelves are great in the pantry and/or kitchen cupboards to help store more items. Wardrobes can be such a waste of space (think space between your clothes and the floor) – buy storage tubs and stack things neatly inside. Utilise space under the stairs and in the roof for items needed seldomley (like Christmas decorations). You can make a nice feature in living areas and/or bedrooms by using storage boxes – cover them with a throw and cushions – hides a multitude of sins!

  • Have a storage box for each room that may help you declutter

  • declutter things you don’t use or don’t need. otherwise get some good reliable storage containers to store things you don’t use all the time.

  • Op shops and second hand things are your new best friends. It’s also worth jumping online and watching tutorials on up-cycling existing items in your home. We gave ourselves a year to finish off our house and was always on the look out for second hand items.

  • Maybe first see if you can find what you don’t need/want and have a garage sale to get some money or even sell on Gumtree. Then depending where you live these days there is so many budget stores such as Kmart, Bunnings etc . I work at my local Vinnies and we have some nice pieces of donated furniture that has been inspected and sell in the store. You just need to go out and look around to see what you want. Good luck

  • Saldy you probably need to get rid of things. Less is more. There isnt a set number of things you should keep. Think shoes. If you have a massive walk in robe with dedicated shoe storage, you could store 50 pairs no worries. But if you are loke me, no matter how much i tided, 50 pairs would be way to much in my small house.
There isnt a lot of benefit of self storage or massive storage ideas at home if the storage areas over take the living space.

  • Unfortunately I think that getting rid of some things and selling some things is a good idea if you feel to cluttered. I do it twice a year. But to keep things tidy head to your local Kmart and buy some containers to store things in and tidy it up.

  • 20 to 25 litre storage boxes with lids for all the things you want to keep. Stack them then throw a colourful tablecloth, sheet or doona cover over them so they cannot be seen and they work excellently as a display table then for trinkets, kids art work and objects. Have the kids make craft objects for putting on display to jazz up areas and make them pretty. Recycle old cardboard boxes, milk cartons, etc and have the kids make collages, indoor wall hangings, planter boxes, etc with them to add colour to rooms. My bedroom wall is covered with items the grand kids have made for me.

  • I’m going to have to read through these comments. Every time I have a big spring clean, it usually involves throwing lots of stuff out. Hubby is a bit of a hoarder and would be thrilled if I could clean without tossing

  • While you don’t want to throw everything away I think decluttering does help.. removing a few things that you wont ever want again.. or which other people can use more than you.. or which you just have too much of…(we re-use glass jars but ever so often just too many build up and its to the recycling they have to go!)

  • You probably are going to have to spend a bit of money on storage. Cube bookshelves with some baskets will be durable and are astoundingly useful for sorting.

  • good question, we just had a garage sale.

  • I agree with lots of boxes and baskets to have everything organised. Sometimes you can get your hands on wooden potato boxes, which you can sand and give a light coat of paint in the color of your decor. Have a look on ebay and gumtree for wooden cupboards and chests, which you again can fix up and paint in the color of your liking. It’s fun and can be very beautiful !

  • Bookcases and cubes ,you can find them at kmart and they are not expensive. The storage containers in different colors look so fresh and save so much room.

  • Get lots of boxes or baskets to sort things into. I have two collapsable boxes that are sturdy and have a lid that is bright and can be sat on. Sorry forgot where I got them but they are a boon for storing things and an extra seat too. An old chest (or new could be a coffee table and storage too. Hope these ideas help

  • I think the key is to have lots of storage spots around the house and group similar things together and make sure you tidy up after yourself so it never becomes a huge task of sorting out. Good luck as it is a daunting task.

  • Some new cushions or pictures to hang up on the walls perhaps?
