Hello!

I need help! My 9 year old has ADHD and never eats much at school apart from muesli bars. This means when I make him sandwiches etc. they never get eaten, as he is always on the go at school. Any tips for lunches that he can eat quickly. He will eat carrots, grapes and cucumber (if I cut them in big chunks). Thanks

  • My daughter with ADHD never eats much at school either. Ever since she started Ritalin her appetite is reduced. She had short acting Ritalin during the school hours and is most often happy to eat after school.


  • Actually my son also doesn’t eat at school, I totally understand you, this seems to be quite a widespread problem, in fact I think this is due to stress, because since I allowed my son to use this source https://gradesfixer.com/ he started to feel better, in general he started to eat more often and even to like school, it seems that the educational system is quite badly adapted for children, this would be a quite major problem, I am glad that I managed to find this source that helps him with his homework, because I don’t have time to do it.


  • Medication can cause this for ADD children. Maybe try like a grazing platter with a variety of healthy things and see what tends to go..


  • I would suggest that whatever you make for dinner that they enjoy, you make extra for their lunch for the next day.


  • My poor mum made my lunch for me everyday and I never ate it. It wasn’t that it wasn’t nice, I just wasn’t hungry. I ate after school and she had no idea. She was shocked when I told her!


  • If your child is on ADHD medication-stimulants, it usually supresses appetite so that may be part of the problem. The other thing may be the lack of attention span. Try talking to your child’s teacher to see what structures are in place when students are eating.


  • Yoghurt in squeezie packs?


  • Puff pastry scrolls! You can make spinach and cheese ones or pizza ones. They’re always a winner.


  • My ADHD son won’t eat at school either, he wants to finish eating quickly so he can play. I give him snacks during the day and make sure when he gets home he eats something healthy and he’s allowed to sit with his iPad to relax and unwind.


  • School is such a tough gig for our ADHD kids. Just remember it will end no matter if he eats his packed lunch each day or not. School is the battlefield, reward them for surviving the day and make home the sanctuary where they can regroup before another tough day. More importantly work on boosting their self esteem. Medication can supress appetite but they don’t starve. My son ate more when having a growth spurt but never enjoyed the process of eating. Now grown with two daughters of his own.


  • Have you tried getting him to help you make the lunches? One of my kids is a bit fussy, but if I get him to help with the making/cooking process he will usually eat what we make together, even if it’s something he wouldn’t normally touch.


  • Is your child also on medication? This could be a contributing factor.
    If not, invest in a big breakfast that includes a smoothie! Don’t forget you can also get added vitamins and iron supplements too.


  • My kids don’t like sandwiches. I pack them mini quiches, frittata slice, home made sushi. Good luck. I hope you find some ideas that work for you all :)


  • My ADHD son almost ever eats his lunch and dinner is not much better, so now his after-school routine is that he can play on his XBOX for an hour, as long as he eats a cup of pre-sliced vegetables while he does it. He has no problem distractedly chomping down on raw carrot, beans, celery etc while focusing on his games.


  • I have an ADHD 10 yo kid on ritalin so he rarely eats at school. We just make sure he has a good breakfast and a good dinner (he will often eat more than me at dinner). I often pack something sweet in his lunchbox (like a muffin) and that will get eaten, I also cut up his fruit so it is easier to eat. I find he doesn’t eat his sandwich, will eat a couple of bits of fruit but mostly its the treat that gets eaten. I figure if he is eating healthy at breakfast and dinner then he is fine. He also uses weekends and school holidays to catch up on any food (literally eats double the food when not on his meds!!!)


  • What about small bites of veggies and stuff? Like those that woolies sells in the frozen section. You can Cook them and he can eats at room temp if he likes them if course


  • My daughter is 8 and had ADHD. Her teachers realize she needs to eat and actually send her to the wet area outside the classroom to get a 10 min head start on her friends. If she’s left to eat with her class, she won’t eat. She talks and then goes to play and food is forgotten. We’ve also made it clear to Miss 8 what is expected, what her minimum is that she has to eat, and she’s good with that. Usually a sandwich and either a custard or a fruit pouch. Maybe have a chat with school and see what they can do to help.


  • I pack my son foods that won’t go dry or slimy, and if he wants to eat them at 3:20 when school is over that’s fine by me! For a typical lunch he will have grapes, mini cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, some dried fruits, and a sandwich made of corn thins (usually butter and vegemite with a slice of cheese to add in if he likes). With a muesli bar or similar thrown in. Pretty much the same every day – I’d find it monotonous but he likes it that way!! And it makes it easier planning food shops!


  • I wouldn’t stress too much about it, kids won’t starve themselves to death as long as he’s eating at home, all will be well


  • Does your child have a favourite colour? Some children only like food to be a certain colour. Or does he have a favourite shape? You could cut the foods into rocketships etc. Maybe he likes to have the same as his friends? Is he more of a grazer? Maybe offer cheese cubes, slices of ham, bread sticks, or cherry tomatoes.
