Hello!

Hi :)
I’m 5 weeks and 6 days pregnant currently. We didn’t know how far along I was when we found out so the doctor sent me in for a dating scan and I turned out to only be 5 weeks and 1 day pregnant at the scan. They couldn’t see an embryo but saw the Yolk Sac. Apparently this is normal as the very beginning of 5 weeks is usually to early to be able to see an embryo on an ultrasound. I have to go back this week when I’m 6 weeks and 3 days to check for it.

I know that there is probably nothing to worry about as I was just only 5 weeks and the doctor and everyone said it was just to early to see the embryo but I’m starting to worry. Has anyone else had the same experience but with good outcomes?
Thanks so much!

  • I’ve experienced this with my pregnancies. Don’t stress it’s just a bit too early and your baby is still evolving. By your next Ultra sound you’ll see your lil peanut xxx

  • Not me but have seen others with this- no need to worry just yet!

  • My daughter went through the same thing and was also worried. She is now 3 months and everything is ok. I’m sure everything will be ok for you too . Best of luck.

  • I haven’t experienced this, but just wanted to send the best of luck to you.

  • Anything unusual with an ultrasound will make you worry, but in this case I really think you shouldn’t have a lot to worry about.

  • I had this exact same situation! I had been tracking my period so knew my exact dates! And I should have been 6 weeks and 4 days. I went in for the scan and they told me there was no embryo only a yolk and I spiralled. They told me I must have got my dates mixed up and I was actually earlier in the pregnancy than I thought. But I knew I wasn’t because I had been tracking my period. I got into the car after the scan and broke down crying and went to good old doctor google. Which made me think I had a blighted ovum or a plethora of other problems. Had to wait and go back just like yourself but they made me wait two weeks. It was hell but low and behold there was the embryo and a heartbeat! Turns out I must have ovulated two weeks later than I had thought. But now we have a beautiful baby boy!

  • So sorry for the ? marks …I had used an emoji but apparently the mum site said NO and posted ? instead. MUCH LOVE TO YOU.

  • Please relax and wait a little longer …Dr is spot on ….early days yet. Enjoy some fresh air and sunshine and very soon you will be enjoying viewing a embryo. ????
All my love to you. ????

  • Your doctors a definitely correct with this one, 5 weeks is still so early. It’s best to wait until at least 7 weeks to be able to see something. I hope by now you’ve had a positive update. And congratulations!

  • I’m not sure if things have changed since I had my kid, but they recommended waiting until 8 weeks to have your first scan. Hopefully all was normal for the 5 week scan, and hope all goes well for your scan next week.

  • Its going to feel like the longest wait, but the best answer will be at your next scan. Good luck sweet.

  • I thought this is why they generally wait until 8 weeks for dating scans

  • I had a dating scan with my first and they couldn’t see much. Not much you can do, just need to be patient until you reach the date milestones. Hope it all goes well

  • When I had my first scan it dated 5 weeks and all they could see was the yolk sac, it wasn’t until my dating scan at 8 weeks they saw the embryo. And he is now 4 months old.
    Don’t stress too much.

  • I found out I was pregnant and had a dating scan from around 6-8 weeks, I can’t remember exactly. I wouldn’t stress at this early.
Could your doctor do a HCG test to check your levels? That may put you at ease.
