Hello!

If we leave a dirty bowl out, in a matter of minutes we have a dozen or so fruit flies emerge. How do we get rid of them instead of using fly spray and killing us in the mean time? Does anyone have any natural remedies for this? Desperate…please help!

  • Putting vinegar in a jar with a little bit of soap and placing cling wrap with some holes poked out may do the trick. It is natural so won’t harm the kids or pets.

  • I get fruit flies whenever I find a plant is being overwatered. Perhaps check any live plants inside the house and check if they are hovering over a particular one .

  • if you have alot of fruit trees around, try to keep the windows shut

  • not sure about fruit flies but bug bombs keep most bugs at bay

  • You can buy fly traps from most hardware stores. They look like little lanterns and work for mozzies too.

  • the traps are meant to work really well

  • some interesting ideas here to try

  • A link with many answers and I hope it helps … or I would suggest bombing the house.

  • Wiping down everything in the kitchen with bleach once a week helps keep fruit fly free.

  • Fruit flies are nasty, thankfully in South Australia we are fruit fly free!

  • hope you tried using the insect traps and worked

  • there are some good comments here

  • I have the same problem and hate putting bananas in the fridge as they go brown

  • Living in the sub tropics fruit flies seem to be part of life. But those insect traps do work and store all fruit in the fridge it lasts longer and attracts less bugs

  • Good ideas here. Hope you’ve had success with one of them?

  • Will also try garlic next time

  • we have them at work…around everyone’s desks…they are so annoying!

  • maybe citronella around would help.

  • I’ve started keeping fruit in the fridge for that very reason. It also lasts better in summer so it might be worth a try. I bought a plastic basket and all the fruit is together and easy to access.

    Try this
    works almost all the time
or you can buy stickers that stick to your doors and windows outside and the fly sticks to it and dies
