Hello!

Hi all, I used to be a good macramé gal back in the late 70’s. I have no recollection of how to now. I’ve tried to find books in second hand and op shops and the general consensus is they are so old they throw them out!! I would love to learn again, and was wondering if anyone has heard of a book, or has one from back in the day, if they can share pics of the fluffy owl, pot hangers on this post? I have purchased a couple of items on ebay which were older books, but not like the old Aussie ones… Any help greatly appreciated. Also where do you buy jute from? Is there still such a thing… I know I can google, but the answers on this site are always better and much appreciated. Ta Kaz

  • I sure do remember macrame from my childhood. I had such fun making this and that. Not sure of where to get patterns etc for it tho. Good luck with your search

  • Is never heard of this but after a quick Google search I must say that I see why you want to get back into it. Sons of the creations are fantastic.

  • I loved macramé in primary school in the 70’s. I made pot plant hangers which my Mum still has & even a handbag! I’d try You Tube for “how to make” tutorials

  • Spotlight have jute. I remember doing an owl at school, probably the best art project I ever did, no idea what happened to it though :)

  • Lincraft and Spotlight have jute. Wow, takes me back to the 70s!
Good luck – hope you have some fun with it!

  • I used to do it in the 90s, when I was a girl guide!

Would love to do it all again

  • I think it is time macramé came back into fashion! I’ve forgotten everything I ever knew too. Perhaps there are tutorials on You Tube.

  • Oh my goodness I remember doing this in primary school, it was part of electives where you got to choose an activity that you wanted to do each week. I think I made a pot plant holder. I wish I could help in where to source things from, have you tried your local library, they can often get books in from all over the place and may am able to help.

  • you girls are angels, thank you so very much for sharing your advice

  • If Spotlight have jute I would think they would have patterns/instruction books or be able to tell you where you can get one.

  • Toys are us have older style toys, otherwise I found eBay have heaps, but tend to be expensive or from over seas. Maybe try gumtree or Facebook buy and sell sites. Good luck on your hunt

  • I remember macramé in primary school – nothing useful, Hugh!

  • thanks ladies – will look up the links x

  • Sure do – love the look of macramé.

  • I loved doing Macrame back in the 70’s. I had hanging beaded pot holders everywhere. I can’t remember a single thing about it now. I was at a Better Homes and Gardens Show in Sydney last November and one of the presenters was showing the crowd how to do Macrame. I think it’s making a comeback.

  • Well I just saw this in my twitter feed so thought I would share it with you. Not sure if you might find this helpful or not but you can easily download it and its not very expensive….

  • There are so many words in your question I have never heard of! I had to google Macrame and I must say I really like some of the Macrame creations1

  • http://www.free-macrame-patterns.com/all-natural-owl.html for the owl. I do have a book some where just need to find it, still unpacking somethings that have been in storage for a few years. The site i got the owl from has lots of ideas and shows you different ways of doing the knots. more then I could ever know there was.

  • I would also suggest you try Google.

  • I can’t help with the books sorry, but I do know Spotlight sells Jute! I’ve seen it there, with the hemp which I use for making necklaces!
