Hello!

I am about to go on maternity leave and would love to be able to make some extra money. HAs anyone had any success with making money online. I am not looking at building a business just some sort of data entry roles if they exist

Want more real mum questions sent to you?

You'll need to check this email to complete your signup.
  • You can if it’s unpaid, but be aware of the legal as well as the tax implications especially if you’re claiming paid maternity leave.

  • You may get something on Airtasker. It will take a while to get a good reputation, but there are plenty of people will little time willing to pay someone to complete a job they do not want to do. There are both physical tasks and online tasks (e.g., sorting through photos, doing research and entering data on a spreadsheet, etc.)
You can also set yourself up as a ghostwriter, however there is a lot of competition there too.
The online market is saturated and the only way to make real money is to put in a lot of time and effort into creating something yourself that is innovative.

  • You can freelance from home doing a number of different jobs, using sites like Upwork. There are a few issues, e.g. no insurance, no super, no sick leave or annual leave, and the biggest one is that you’d be competing with people from all over the world, many of whom can do the same job for less, simply because $5 per hour in one country is the standard wage, whereas in Australia it is not. However if you choose your jobs carefully it can be beneficial. e.g. I paid $5 for a quick graphic design job on Fiverr, and it probably took the person 10 minutes to do the job, simply because they had the right software (Photoshop) and skills. Always make it worth your while, e.g. if you know a job will take you an hour and they are only paying $5-$10 for the job, don’t do it.
The other consideration is that although Australian based businesses will pay someone overseas to do graphic design or web development, for any tasks involving writing and editing, they are likely to seek freelancers whose first language is English. e.g. you could write blog articles, SEO articles (easier than you think!), content for newsletters, social media posts etc. Whatever you do, don’t undervalue yourself to compete with international freelancers who work for less – when you set up your profile focus on your strengths and what differentiates you from other freelancers. There are likely to be many freelancing sites out there, Upwork is just one of them.

  • I too would love to be able to earn money online and work from home. I have been doing party plans but they are not easy to earn money if you are not “pushy” enough.

  • I to am intrested but have failed to find anything good in over 3 years. I was doing surveys for awhile but I just became so boring and I would have to do sooo many to get a $20 voucher so gave up. Good luck!!

  • I too have seen a lot of people ask this question and scoured the answers myself for ideas. I just do the surveys, won’t make you rich, but will provide a small bit of side money.

  • I have no good experiences with data entry roles, but I’ve been earning a fair bit online since 2000. I’m a long-time member of nearly fifty different online survey, forum, discussion, social utility groups , etc & earn thousands a year, right up to the tax-free threshold, with no money down at all. I don’t like commitment to a business & all the sleepless nights, obligations, exposure & liabilities that go with it. I don’t want to be famous, just need the extra cash as effortlessly & anonymously as possible without going looking for it.

Is your objective to get wealthy or just to pass time productively? Are you in financial difficulty?

  • Best wishes in this endeavour! Let us know whether you found anything appropriate for you as I’m sure there are a number of other MoMs thinking the same thing.

  • Online surveys offer more of a pocket money type income but there are some good ones like My opinions and Rewards Central. You don’t pay anything and you can do survey whenever you feel like. But you do need to earn a certain number of points before you can withdraw money.

you could register on a site like freelancer that list thousands (if not more) jobs in various areas (data entry, proofreading, writing etc). but there are a lot of freelancers on the site so you may not always get work

  • If you do join a survey company as i am a member of quite a few of them dont rely on them to supliment a incomes, as its more about earning a few bucks here and there. in spare time.
Never join one of these thats asks for a upfront payment just to do the same suveys you can do through other groups..One of my friends payed out a bit of money only to never get any surveys and was not able to get her money back… Also be wary of any emails that state you can earrn large sums of money at home.. I am sure the jobs are out there that you are after its just a matter of knowing where to look.. I hope you find one..

  • I would also love to know what is out there. I do lots of surveys but only make a few dollars here and there and would love to find something a touch more lucrative.

  • Thought I would provide more of a definition of what a SCAM actually is as can be a grey area.

When I was a new SAHM I spent many hours doing online surveys etc… I didn’t understand the online income world at all. SO, I went back to what I knew pre-motherhood which was to do party plan. Then, right at the same time I found another home based business that was online, no stock, didn’t require parties/demos etc…
I got started with the business opportunity and a couple years later am still working in the same business happily.
Reason I was compelled to post here and to define SCAM is because, I could have believed all the stuff about “SCAMS” and never got started in my opportunity. Yes, do your homework, be wary, have your wits but do listen to your intuition and gut instinct too when seeking to create extra income. I didn’t with my earlier ventures and paid for it, learn’t my lessons as I see it now.
Good luck in your search. Listen to your instincts ;)

    ” SCAM”
    Definition
A fraudulent scheme performed by a dishonest individual, group, or company in an attempt obtain money or something else of value. Scams traditionally resided in confidence tricks, where an individual would misrepresent themselves as someone with skill or authority, i.e. a doctor, lawyer, investor. After the internet became widely used, new forms of scams emerged such as lottery scams, scam baiting, email spoofing, phishing, or request for helps. These are considered to be email fraud. Also see phishing, scheme.

  • A lot of mums would love the same but I never heard of someone who got something like this. Does it exist?

  • I would make sure you go through legitimate agencies if these jobs do exist.

  • They exist, but you do have to be very careful of scams. I can’t point you to anything legit.
