We did with the 2 oldest kids. They get $30 credit for 60 days which cost them when the message, make a call or turn the data on. If they run out before the 60 I won’t to it up as it has taught them to watch how they use the phone and how often. They connect to Wi-Fi at home on it.
Next year though the school is bringing in a huge restriction on mobile and the kids will have them locked up all day
Next year the public school students will not be allowed to have their phones on them from the first to last school bells.
Start off stricter than you think you probably should be, that will give you the option to relax restrictions. It is so much harder to enforce them later on.
Things to start with –
No phones in bedrooms at night.
No phones when doing homework.
Parent/carer needs to know the passcode.
No Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram etc. until they are 13 (some parents give them access earlier than what is allowed)
Let Mum/Dad know if someone you don’t know tries to contact you.
Do not give your address to anyone that you don’t know in real life.
Do not have ‘friends’ online that you do not know in real life.
My daughter got her first mobile when she started Year 7. No special restrictions. The only thing I asked her… was to put it on! Yes, because often she had it with her, but it was off. Not of much use if I had to contact her. Luckily with time she became better at that.
My son is starting high school next year. He was given a phone earlier this year as I got a good deal on a plan for him. I think the restrictions will depend on your personal circumstances and what you’re comfortable with.
I think it’s best to work out what you’re happy with and then sit down and talk to your child and maybe make some compromises if needed
