Hello!

A friend has two young girls (9) & (1) and paid a sitter fifty for ten hours, I also know others who pay twenty five an hour, to the same sitter. What is the average rate?

  • I think it would be based on qualifications of the sitter and in line with at least the minimum wage requirements.

  • It would all depend on the age and experience of the babysitter as well as the age of your children and how much looking after they require. Eg babies in nappies, needing bottles and naps would require more then a seven year old that just needs a movie before bed

  • I’ve never had a paid babysitter. But I guess it would depend on how old the sitter was and how much experience she’s had. And also how young your children are and how difficult tbey will be to look after

  • I think it really varies on qualifications, age of children and what they will be doing. Ie is it nap time or do they have to put in effort!

  • Finding this interesting as I have seen various rates as well. Think it seems to depend on the sitter and time of day

  • Wow, your question has really sparked some interesting answers!
As a teen, I would get $6/hour from my neighbours regardless of the ages of the kids, how many kids (1-4) , or how long it was for. I guess it really does depend on what is negotiated ahead of time, and acceptable for both parties. Our eldest teen has watched her younger siblings for a short while, when I had an emergency errand, but I’ve never paid a sitter yet.

  • I would have thought $20.00 per hour is reasonable, but this can be open to negotiation depending on length of time, age of sitter etc.

  • really does depend on the sitter – I wouldn’t pay anymore than $25 an hour but if it was going to be over about 3 hours I would negotiate a rate with them.

If it is only a teenager for extra money the $50 would probably suffice but if it is a professional babysitter/nanny type person with all their certificates and checks I would expect to pay them more.

  • Well I babysat the other day,was to be $20 for an hour, was her offer, was 3 hrs.Did it again ,was for 3 hrs this time $50. They wher 5 hrs 10 mins, next time I will be putting them straight you don’t say 3 hrs & you are 5 ,how rude,no didn’t get any extra.

  • It depends on the number of kids and the number of hours. Each sitter usually determines thier own rate

  • It kind of depends on the age of the sitter and the amount of time you plan to be away. My daughter got $100 from 7pm til 10am the next day, but most of that was for petrol

  • It depends on the age and qualifications of the sitter. I pay a 15 yo with no quals 10 per hour if I go out. But pay an adult with a cert IV 20 p/h for after school care.

  • I haven’t used a paid babysitter yet but I had heard $25 is an average price.

  • I reckon it depends on the person and how long it is.

  • yeah that is a n amazingly cheap price.

  • sounds like a huge bargain. $20-$25 is the going rate

  • I’ve read a lot of helpful info, never paid for a babysitter myself.

  • I think $20 an hour is a fair price. $50 for 10 hours is a bargain to me.

  • Sorry, I have no idea – having a good read of the other comments on here.

  • i agree, 10 – 15 an hour
