Hello!

There are so many flies inside here at the moment, I’m looking for a natural, non-chemical way to deal with them? Also, something for ants? I used to use the mortein intermittent wall sprays, but am ridding our home of chemicals. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • I have used little pots, with lavender and mint planted. The insects hate that.

  • borax mixed with honey works good

  • Borax mixed with honey in little pots for the ants. venus fly traps for the flies…they also beautiful wen they flower.

  • mint is the best – I grow a big pot of it near the door and it keeps the bugs away

  • Get an empty 1 litre spray bottle, put in 100 ml pf white vinegar and 10 drops of Peppermint essential oil, and fill the bottle with water. I had trouble with ants, and someone suggested I try this mix, and it works a treat. Flies & mozzies don’t like it either. It’s a bonus that vinegar is great for cleaning, and the peppermint oil smells great.

  • grow mint around your doors and windows, they dont like the strong smell of mint

  • i have a sonic plug in puts off a sound that as humans we don’t hear seems to do pretty good so far also have used the chemical free lanterns that you hang outside

  • Borax is a great product for insect invasions!

  • I have got the same problem at the moment and I can’t stand flies! I’ve been squatting them which gives me some satisfaction but I will be looking into some herb options for a more permanent solution to stop them coming in!

  • I’ll be looking into the herbs suggestion made here for flies…they drive me nuts!

  • Sticky fly strips ,hung around ,look a bit ugly be works

  • You can buy those catchers from bunnings, you just add water to it. If you hang them outside the flies should no longer come in.

  • A friend of mine told me recently that the mix 1/4 cup of eucalyptus oil with 1/4 cup of home brand dish washing liquid with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. I haven’t tried it yet but will give it ago myself

  • I happy to use a squirt of fly spray every now & again but it seems like the flies are immune to it & I end up using a whole can!! I’m going to try the eucalyptus oil & the envirosafe.

  • I have issues with ants, slater bugs and millipedes in my house. I will use some of these suggestions, they’re so annoying!

  • Sticky traps for your windows are great for catching pesky flies with having to chase the with a could of toxic chemicals

  • Chalk: Keep Ants and Slugs Out of the House
Ants and Slugs Won’t Touch Chalk. So, simply draw a line in front of your doorway where you are having problems with these pesky critters and they won’t cross it, meaning they won’t be able to get into your house.

You could also try sprinkling Bi-Carb or talcum powder.

There are certain herbs you can grow that will deter flies.
I would recomend chatting to your local plant nursery & see what they recomend for your area.

You can also cut a bottle in half, remove the lid, insert the top half upside down to form a funnel
make a mix of water and vegemite and sit it outside the doors, in full sunlight if possible.
It takes 24-48 hours to start working.
Its a cheaper alternative to the shop bought ones

  • You have some good answers there but I think you will find those plug ins heat up chemicals and release them into your home wether there are insects there or not!!!!

  • I use chemical free plug in and fly traps outside

  • Thank you everyone, I am having these issues myself. You get purchase sticky pads that are placed on windows (they look nice) and these attract the flies and they get stuck, you then unstick them and toss them out.
