Hello!

Just wondering if anyone has any natural pest remedies for spiders. I hate the little buggers and they are EVERYWHERE in my house. We’re over run by daddy long legs mostly, all around the skirting boards and architraves. My daughter has been complaining about spiders in her room, which worries me. She’s only 3 so not sure if she’s just picking up on my hate for them or whether there really are spiders in there. Our house is only 2.5yrs old and we had it sprayed professionally before we moved in but we’re still having trouble.
I’ve heard peppermint oil can keep them at bay. Has anyone tried it? Any advice would be wonderful. Thanks :)

  • Have been told that spiders are repelled by the smell of peppermint oil so I sprinkle it through my house and seems to work.

  • I like the Bay leaf idea for ants – although I am not sure anything works.

  • I was thinking about you yesterday, while watching a video where someone was talking abut using lemon oil against spiders. 10-15 drops of lemon oil in a spray bottle mixed with water. If you try let me know if it helped!!

  • I love eucalyptus and tea tree oil! I add some to the mop water. Ants don’t like it either. Also if you’re getting ants in your pantry put a dry bay leaf on each shelf. My grandmother did this as did my mum I never believed it till I tried it myself

  • I agree with mom93821, I dont mind the daddy long legs, I have found they keep the scarey white tails etc away… if i remove the daddy long legs the others seem to be around but when they are around the scary ones disappear.

  • Mum165081, your idea is brilliant. I don’t normally promote brands but I am this time. Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray can be sprayed on surfaces. Eucalyptus also kills germs. It can also be sprayed on your skin for curs, abrasionbs insect bites and muscular aches and pains. The can is labelled that the Active Ingredient is Eucalyptus Oil. If you have a cold or stuffy nose you can also spray some in your room and when you inhale it seems to help clear your nose. Make sure you don’t spray it too concentrated then take deep breaths as it can be fatal. The can has hydrocarbon to pressurise the contents so the can will spray when you need it to. You also have to keep it away from naked flames. You just need to use it sensibly. …..I just discovered you can also use it as a Pre Wash Stain Remover, also on carpet. The rest of the instructions and lists of what you can use it for are on the can. Iam not sure whether you can buy it in a Supermarket or only in a Pharmacy. I am astounded how many things Eucalyptus Oil can be used for. Room Freshener too. Cleans office equipment — no need for chemicals!!!! “You learn something new every day”

  • I personally would get someone in again to get rid of those yucky spiders!

  • I have heard baby power is a dislike to spiders, although I find spraying around the outside of the house keep them from coming inside. There are child friendly products out there or you can make your own.

  • I would keep an eye out for white tail spiders. If they bite you it can cause ulceration and eat away your flesh. Their bites are extemely painful too. I got two bites from a spider which the Dr. and the General Practice Nurse at the Medical Centre suspect were from white tail spiders (not in my house). I had to take a double dose of antibiotics and antihistamines for a few days to relieve the itching and pain. The owners later discovered they had a bit lot of them, used “spider bombs” early in the morning and went out for the rest of the day. They think they succeeded in eradicating them because they have searched and haven’t found any live ones since. A friend of mine knows a lady who was bitten by one and her arm keeps ulcerating about every 10-12 months and she has to have hospital treatment.

  • Removing the webs may help. I do not mind daddy long legs!

  • You could try eucalyptus oil, that seems to keep most pests away.
