Hello!

We want to buy a new fridge, a fancy one with water and ice. Is it better to get the wall one? And freezer down the bottom or on the side?

  • Side-by-side the shelves are not as wide. It only has one motor so if you have extra in the freezer side and have a power failure for any length of time you may lose more food that way.
Ideally you would hve the freezer section of a fridge freezer as you use your fridge part more than your freezer so you don’t have to bend down as much.

  • DONT get a Westinghouse! I’ve gone through 2 in 2 years. The first one died within weeks of us installing it. It’s replacement died 6 months later. Lucky we paid for extended warranties and got automatic replacements

  • Yes a very good and interesting question. Good answers!

  • This probably is really silly, and I bet you have considered it, but make sure you have a tap to plumb your fridge to. I know someone who got a fridge with a water dispenser and didn’t have anywhere to plumb it! Oops :p

  • Would also love some recommendations! :)

  • Mine is side by side…..even though it is a big fridge, and looks quite impressive…..it is too narrow. I need to reach in with one arm or dislocate my shoulders to reach in with both…..it is pretty inconvenient. The water & ice have broken down now around the 6 times (in the last 4 years) & we won’t be fixing it again….one time we had to get the part from America as it cost almost $800 here. Don’t know if it’s just bad luck or that part isn’t made to last as long as the fridge itself. It’s a GE.

  • thanks guys! just hope we get a good tax return! I haven’t measured the space yet,

  • Super good and interesting question – following with interest.

  • My advice is this – we have a side by side with water and ice and the fridge section is so skinny so I can’t fit massive Christmas trays in there. Don’t make that mistake and get one that has a decent width!

  • To get the ice maker/water it’ll need to be attached to the plumbing – which is an added cost. Regarding the freezer location think about what you use least – for us it was the freezer so we got one on the bottom. We were limited by fridge size due to the fridge cavity, if your fridge isn’t in a cavity I recommend get the biggest one you can with the biggest freezer capacity. Once you work out what size you can get consider one with the highest star energy rating. We also got ours with a stainless steel fingerprint resistant finish. Hope this helps

  • We have one and the whole family loves it, we have the side by side one. It really depends on if you are up to bending down to put things in the frezzer. Also if you need to be able to lock it to keep kids out of the drawer. We occasionally need to tie ours up to keep the kids out of the fridge( when we have a special cake etc in there), with the side by side ones its easy to do but dont know how you would do it when its a drawer. Also before getting one get a quote on the cost of getting a tap put in behind the fridge. Would hate for you have to wait to get that fitted before been able to use it properly. Its the best thing ever we have found as all my kids just help themselves when they want a drink. even my two year old (nearly three) does it now.
