Hello!

I’m a new mum and am interested in joining a playgroup with my son. What age should he be? What do I look for when looking for one that’s suitable? We are located in Sans Souci, Sydney. Some advice and past experiences would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

  • I would suggest any age over 12 months. Look for one with kids of a similar age.

  • It all depends on what you want, what is available in your area and what your child is happy with. Any age is acceptable, depending on circumstances

  • You can go to playgroups with your baby at any age. It seems good to build up theirs social skills from an early age

  • I joined my first playgroup for my first when he was approx. 5 months. For my second, he was approx. 3.5 months. I think it just depends on the group. Be guided by the facilitator.

  • Playgroups have all range of age groups attend, those not old enough for school. I took mine once they were mobile. Eg crawling and could sit up and engage with others

  • Now! Dont delay on getting involved. Just remember there are different groups so if you start and doesnr feel rught do try another.

  • Depending on your situation in terms of siblings, socialising with other youngsters etc I’d say around 6mths when they can start to enjoy the company of other little ones? I attended one with my daughter from about the age of 1.5 until about 3 when we started to then have more play dates and other activities etc. Prior to Playgroup we had attended ABA and occasional Mothers Group catch ups from day dot.

  • Check local community centres and notice boards, good Mum and kids get together in playgroups. I did with my kids and was fun even though I was an older Mum than those in group, I sang nursery rhymes and played ring a roses etc.. kids love it when mums join in too, not just sit watching them.

  • Never to young as it is a great way to meet other mums, I always so for one that feels right

  • Never too young i think!

  • I find that before 6 months of age the children pick up lots of bugs, and coughs, and colds that other children have more than when they are older however many people do join mothers groups whilst pregnant and continue to form playgroups with these people once bubs is born. It really depends on how you feel and whether you have any concerns with your child.

  • U can join playgroups even before bubs is born

  • We joined a playgroup when my daughter turned 3. She loves it & now just runs on ahead of me & can’t wait to get there.

  • I joined when my son was a few months old was a great outting. For us both to meet new people. And have some time away from the house and was good to see other mums for adive etched

  • We joined when our daughter was a few months old.

  • You can join at any age, with my daughter we joined when she was three months. Go to this http://playgroupaustralia.org.au/ website which will list your states playgroups (with south Australia you have to email the administrator to get a list of them close to your area, not sure about NSW)

  • Look around at all ones near where you live and see if any are suitable. I think any age is great to get out of the house, meet other mums and bub can interact with other kids and learn how to “share” toys.

  • From birth if you like! I think from 6 months your baby will get stimulation from playgroup, prior to that you will enjoy adult interaction.

  • I would join a playgroup now. That way, your son will grow up amongst other children and you’ll also make friends. If you choose a local playgroup (church based ones are great) your son will probably go to school with the other children from playgroup. The first playgroup you go to, won’t necessarily be the one you join, so visit a few different ones to see which one suits you the best.
