Hello!

I need help!
Friend is getting married in a few mths. It’s a black tie event. I need to buy a dress but am clueless.
I’m more akin to the “before” on makeover shows. I’m a jeans, joggers and top kinda person who wears oversized jumpers when cold!
I’ve seen some nice dresses online, which are also affordable for a one off dress. But they are all shown on tall slim models and I’m neither of those!
I don’t get sizing at all!
I’m around 5’3. Can fit a size 10 top and pants are a 14 for comfort. My bust is not large, and I’m still carrying some baby weight.

I know all places have sizing guides but honestly they never work for me.
So I really need help with how to get a dress that will fit nicely but won’t have people wondering if I’m expecting. Also any suggestions on websites you have purchased from and it actually looks like the picture pls.

  • Some really great tips here, it can be so hard shopping online. Grateful for the advice.

  • Try ASOS and The Iconic for real people clothing! Buy in advance as both have free returns to get a few options. General advice is get something fitted regardless of your body shape as its more flattering!

  • Previously I hated shopping online foe clothes but as of late have found it helpful to measure myself and suss out reviews. Normally if reviews say things run small them I’ll size up a size. If they run big I tend to stick with my measurements. So far so good.

  • Keep browsing as I have noticed a lot of places show them on models with comments like “Sarah is 5″ 4 and wearing a size 12″. If you don’t wear dresses often I’d try some on in the shops first to get an idea of what style you are comfortable in.

  • I now do a lot of shopping online for sales, specials and discounts. I found searching reviews prior to purchasing from particular sites and products was incredibly helpful. Other shoppers of sites give very honest reviews and feedback.

  • If you can avoid shopping online for clothes, it would be a much better idea to be able to try things on in a shop. When you do go in to a shop you like, ask the sales assistant for advice about what to wear. They may be able to pick out something for you that could be perfect, that you would not usually go for. If you have to shop online, how about going for brands that you already own? That way you may be able to get a more accurate idea with sizing. Happy shopping :)

  • Dont buy online! Plus if they are cheap they are probably made overseas and made to fit that body type.
Given your height, l suggest Danni Minogues petite range at Target.

  • When there is a large discrepancy in size between upper and lower body, a 2 piece set might be better. Also most online shops give a sizing chart with measurements

  • Personally I wouldn’t buy online, but go in store and try some items on

  • Sizing can vary from store to store and if an item does not fit I send it back for a size up or down.
