Hello!

What are your suggestions for ideas that help promote a good sleep routine and maximise chances of only a couple of night time wakes for food/nappy changes?

  • My daughter didn’t sleep through until she was almost four, I would maybe just make sure that your child is really warm and comfortable. Also for you to be relaxed that’s probably the best advice I could give. Sometimes there is nothing wrong it’s just the child being awake and it’s as simple as that 🙂

  • I like the 7 to 7 routine outlined in tizzie halls book save our sleep – bub goes to bed at 7 and wakes at 7. She outlines feed times etc and some of the book I didn’t like but this routine worked for us. From memory if breastfeeding it was a feed every 4 hrs through the day but routines vary depending on age. Making sure they are warm enough through the night, well fed through the day and follow the same night routine – bath, boob/bottle, book or straight to bed

  • In addition to what others have said about food, I find that clothing and blanketing appropriately according to the room temperature, is vital. My daughter has been sleeping through the night (i.e. minimum 8 hours uninterrupted) since she was 4 weeks old (I know, I got very lucky!) but she will wake if she happens to be too hot or too cold in the middle of the night.

  • Depending on the age of your baby you could give a few spoonfuls of baby cereal with their night feed before you go to bed yourself (perhaps the 10.00 feed) A relative of mine tried that with 2 or her children when they still small enough to be in their bassinets. Both of them slept longer between that feed and the next one than when they weren’t given it.

  • It depends on the age of your baby. I would suggest a good feed and a lovely warm lavender bath before bed with cuddles. Then into bed. It really depends on the baby but 1 or 2 wakes (max) should be it during the night for a feed and/or nappy change and then straight back to bed. At about 4-5mths for my kids this is what I did.
But remember it may not always work this way. Every one and every baby is different. Some may need to more food etc. My kids love to sleep, even a couple years later they still do. good luck!
