Hello!

I have a 2 year old who I would like to toilet train, but his speech is limited. I am wondering if this will be an issue as he won’t be able to communicate with me.

  • My Daughter just toilet trained this week! It actually took a while, I put her in undies and pretty much just let her wet herself so that she knew what a wee was, and every time she did, I told her, wee on potty, and took her to the potty. After a few months she finally got it! She was two in april. She now is pooing and weeing on the toilet and has only wet herself a few times this week.
So be persistent! And it can be super painful when they just don’t seem to be getting it, but it will happen eventually. :)

  • My kids mostly gave non-verbal cues anyway when they needed to go so it was just a matter of noticing these signs which can be hard when you’ve got a busy day! Persistence really is key though and both of my kids were completely different! My son responded well to a sticker chart and visual tracking of rewards and started with a potty. My daughter couldn’t care less about sticker charts and outright refused to sit on a potty so went straight to trying with a toilet seat and steps lol… I also made a big fuss of when they were successful and kept prompting during the day because kids often get too involved in their games to even notice they need the toilet at first.

  • Make or print out a chart and put a sticker for everytime they went potty

  • I was told no drinks an hour before bed and take them to the toilet every hour and if they dont go sit them on the toilet every half an hour until they do use the toilet. My daughter had speech problems as well but she was completely toilet trained within 2 weeks even at night. You can do it and just persist with it.

  • You can give it a try. It will soon become obvious if they are ready or not. Just don’t stress too much if its not happening yet.
