Hello!

My son seems to enjoy alot of different things and cannot decide which sport or activity he wants to do. I would love to be able to let him do more then 1 but right now that isnt an option.
Also as a 7 yr old boy his mind changes constantly and I dont want to put him into something he is just going to get over within a few weeks.
What does your 7 yr old boy do?

  • My little boy has just started Muay Thai and he’s loving that. He has a lot of energy to burn and this really helps :)

  • We did swimming & soccer at that age. And they did for some terms karate

  • Soccer is a great sport for boys and girls.

  • Can you try á school holiday program that will let him test a few things to find his interest?

  • Lots of seven year old boys enjoy playing soccer.

  • Swimming, soccer, tennis and nippers here

  • I think what one seven year old boy enjoys may differ greatly to what another may get excited about. I suggest you have a big chat about his options (cricket, football, tennis, judo, swimming, dance, soccer etc) and let him choose!

  • Many sporting clubs offer a come and try free session. Perhaps you could try a few different ones and see which one he enjoys the most. Scouts is a good option because they allow children to try a diverse range of sports & activities inclusive of the annual registration fee.

  • there are some good comments here

  • you could always try a program like active kids that samples all different sports to give them a taste of what to expect and that way he will be more likely to stick to something if he has already tried it.

  • I would suggest a team sport. They are great for socialisation and also for learning the skills to collaborate and work as a team player. Soccer is very popular in my town for young boys

  • Its great he tries lots of different activities. Just enrol him for one term at a time and tell him he must attend the 10 classes. Then if he likes it you can enrol him again or try something else. If you have a junior basketball skills class in your area my kids really enjoyed these and learnt lots of skills in the one term.

  • my son is 7 and hes been doing swimming lessons for the last 3 years but this year has decided that he wants to do karate and tennis, both are very expensive so I told him he is allowed to chose one, I took him to trial classes for both and he chose karate.

  • I have an almost 9yr old daughter so not exactly what you are after but she has just decided to play basketball after doing a 4 day clinic. Initially we had a talk about joining a team & that she needs to see out the season not decide after a few games its not for her. The season starts next week so we will see how she goes. What are your boys interests? What about Auskick or milo cricket to start with?

  • tenpin bowling is a good option you pay weekly so you only pay for what you use.

  • Thanks heaps for your advice and recommendations.
We are looking into a few different things to see what he enjoys better

  • Auskick, cricket, karate, gymnastics, athletics. They are just a few that come to mind. He is young, he may do a term of something, then another term doing something else, he will find out what he likes he is still very young :)

  • My oldest two participated in an afterschool sporting group that did a few weeks of a number of sports. For example – 2-3 weeks of basketball, tennis, cricket, football etc so they could try a variety and see what “fit” with them. It was held at the school.

I also know our local tennis club run after school programs and so do a few other sporting groups – a kind of “try-it-out” program without having to sign up for a full term or year. The school should be able to tell you. Ours were usually listed on the newsletter regularly. You can also try your local PCYC and YMCA if you have them.

  • Take him to a few that are inexpensive like soccer and don’t buy him his boots until you know he is going to stay, try swimming at a pool or beach and indoor cricket is also relatively cheap

  • My 7 year old plays cricket in summer and football in winter, martial arts are good too.
