Hello!

My son has decided just now that he would be interested in doing a sport. He hasn’t really done any sport at all after school – only school sport. I know at his age they are starting to get competitive going for rep teams and gradings etc. What would be a good sport for him to try out with his limited skills?

  • Basketball

  • see what he is interested in and comfortable in doing :) hope he enjoys it

  • Its probably best to ask him . Like would you like to kick a ball such as soccer , or cricket where you can bat or bowl ? What about solo spots such as swimming , tennis , bowling etc… etc //

  • Mom 160421 has a great point – don’t be afraid of graded sports – it makes the sport more enjoyable for all participants. It is kids sport after all, nothing more. It is meant to be fun and within capacity of all participants with the potential for life long love of active lifestyle.

  • It really depends on what your son would like to do. Lots of sports are graded, so even if he’s starting out, he’ll be placed in a team suited to his current skills.

  • AFL is good. So is soccer and cricket. Maybe you should ask your son what he would be interested in.

  • I would be asking him. It will depend a lot on what he likes at school, if the decision is peer driven (he may to to do what his friends are doing) etc. There are many options, both at school and clubs. Over the summer many clubs run clinics to improve skills/introduce sports. These are excellent for people to try sports before committing to a team. Martial Arts are great too. There are so many benefits that come from sports – enjoy.
