Hello!

I would like to start a little vege garden with my 3 year old son. Any suggestions on what we should plant and how to keep him interested? We have an area about 2 metres by 1 metre.

  • I’m doing the exact same with my daughter 3yo. We have planted peas, carrots and spring onion so far. Love it!!

  • Snow peas and strawberries:)

  • herbs are usually a good one like parsley and mint as they are quite hardy

  • There are some great garden ideas in the art and craft section, kids seem to go best with fast growing and high yielding things like tomatoes and beans!

  • Spring onions are great because they grown quite quickly and the child can see them growing above the ground. Carrots are good too, because there’s the excitement of wondering how big they are before you pull them out of the ground. Cherry tomatoes are good, because they’re sweet and kiddies can pick them off the vine to eat them. Snow peas work well as they climb up a wall or trellis.

  • beans and peas are usually reliable growers, corn is fun too. herbs are great for permanent additions.

  • You want to aim for quick growing vegetables with tasty yeilds; snow peas, tomatoes, capsicum even corn. Just remember you can grow plenty of things vertically and in hanging baskets too!

  • things he can eat when they ready like carrot,

  • Herbs, climbing peas or beans, cherry tomatoes, strawberries and capsicum. I found with carrots they got really excited about the leaves but didn’t get much carrot.

  • Herbs, carrots, beans, zucchini, potatoes etc.

  • Cherry tomatoes, radishes as they grow quick, strawberries (these are great hanging in baskets) carrots, peas or snow peas and lettuces.

  • My daughter planted cherry tomatoes early in the Summer , My granddaughter is only now 18 months old. She watered them from when they were first planted and now picks them. Great because she can eat them from the bush and make the connection.. Plant what is coming into season , It adds a special touch if they can eat them as tit is picked.

  • broad beans are excellent because they grow easily and tall. With the cool weather coming soon, broccoli , silverbeet and cauliflowers are also great. Silverbeet is excellent because you pick leaves and it keeps growing.,as well as rhubarb.

  • Plant some herb seedlings, radish seeds come up quickly and are ready to pull in about 6 weeks, little varieties of lettuce, of different colour, rainbow chard instead of silver beet, beetroot, Have a rain guage and some wind mills too .

  • Get a few things that will grow quickly such as bean sprouts.

if he has to wait too long for results it will get boring.

  • Different colored carrots are a hit with my son

  • Start with a few seedlings while waiting for the seeds to germinate. that way you can be picking especially lettuce within a couple of weeks.

  • Dwarf beans are a great first plant. Big seeds and they will grow anywhere (plus they put nitrogen back into the soil). Radishes also have a great germination rate and will grow all year round (although the seeds are quite small. Have fun!

  • Chives, spring onions, broccoli & marigold (its like bug repellant)

  • I have a veggie patch and my kids have one too. Easy things to grow would be peas , lettuces, tomatoes , carrots. Good luck!
