Hello!

How do I stop my 6 month old sucking her thumb? – She used to suck on her fingers and I stopped her by using mittens and it lasted about 6 weeks. Now she has found her thumb but can get off any mitten, sock and cover I put on her hand. I just want her to stop the big suck she does as her thumb is getting really red and I dont want her to break the skin. Any idea that will still allow her to use her hands for play??

  • Why do you want to stop it? My son sucked his thumb and he grew out of it…..with a little help from a sore on his thumb from an accident

  • My daughter stopped after I kept moving her hand for, her mouth and replacing it with a toy or her dummy

  • There is stuff from the chemist called ban suck. You paint it on the nail and it tastes gross and breaks the habit.

  • I would just let her go, its pretty normal behaviour

  • i dont think youl be able to stop a thumb sucker there going to keep going no matter what. try teethign rings, or a fruit sack that your lil one can chew on instead

  • he could be teething could u try a teething ring……….

  • If she stops sucking on her thumb it will be replaced by something else, worry about this when she is older!

  • there are some good comments here

  • maybe when she does just pull her hand away and give her a toy or something
i wouldnt be too worried though

  • You are making a mountain out of a mole hill …. let her be and she will stop on her own … let her be a baby

  • Have you had any luck?

  • we initially did not want to give our son a dummy but were advised to by the child nurse expert as his sucking reflex wasn’t fully developed when he was born early and he was having trouble feeding. He gave away the dummy when he was 14 months old and has perfect teeth. We never put anything on the dummy.

  • A dummy, she will grow out of it much more easily

  • Good luck! Not ideal, but if she wants to suck I’d give her a dummy – at least you can take that away from her..

  • I wish you the best – my grand daughter still sucks hers occasionally and she is 6.

  • You could try a dummy or let her grow out of it

  • Good luck with it and hope you have success.

  • i hope its worked out

  • Yeah I would advise giving her a dummy because its much easier I get her of it then a thumb. My little sister sucked her thumb and it destroyed her teeth because they couldn’t get her to sop until she was like 6-7

  • I would think the only thing you could do is give her a dummy.
All three of my kids sucked their thumbs and all three of them stopped of their own accord when they were ready.
