Hello!

I’m just wondering how mums teach their daughters how to wash the vagina properly. I have but I don’t think she is doing it correctly.

  • I don’t think this is something you can teach just once. You probably have to explain several times over a few months before they truly get it. It was six months before I was confident my daughter knew what to do properly.

  • I agree as long as she takes a bath or a shower it’s ok, too much washing is not good and destroys the natural balance. It’s more important to wipe down correctly at the toilet.

  • There’s not much to know on how to clean a vagina. Just a regular wash down in the shower I swear fine. Nothing needs doing internally if that’s what you’re asking about. Wiping from front to back after a wee is important to avoid urinary tract infections

  • Is she too old for a bath? That would be the best way. There’s not too much washing needed for a vagina

  • Agreed with the comments posted, it’s self cleaning, just ensure she is wiping herself correctly after using the toilet, that’s more important for reducing the risk of infections.

  • I’m wondering if there is a reason you feel she isn’t washing correctly? There is some advice about vulva hygiene here that might be worth a read if you have concerns —>http://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/Vulval_skin_care_for_girls/

  • The vagina is self cleaning, you don’t need to be putting soap or anything as this can cause infection.

  • I agree with some of the answers that the vagina is self cleaning and apart from warm water in the shower nothing else should or needs to be used.

  • My mum told me to use soap ( this is like 25 years ago) but that is actually harmful and all you need is wiping after urinating and washing in warm water in shower.

  • I have shown my daughter, but I still check every so often , just to make sure she doesn’t get any infections etc.

  • The vagina is a self cleaning organ. Soaps or other agents are very harmful to the vaginal environment. Other than wiping after urinating and rinsing in the shower nothing more needs, nor should be done to “clean” the vagina.

  • I was told to teach my daughter just to use warm water in the shower.

  • I’ve found teen magazines like Girlfriend/Dolly etc are great for information. Most GP’s advise to just wash with warm water in a shower so that you don’t strip the vagina of natural bacteria that’s needed to keep it healthy.
