Hello!

My eldest is 5 and gets so cranky when he hurts himself eg stubbed toe, is this normal? Any tips to help him not do this anymore?!

  • I wouldn’t make a too big issue of this. i would treat it lightly with “accidents happen to us all” and share your own little and big accidents and mistakes.

  • Show them its ok to show emotion and just be there for them

  • Let me know how you go – I have one of those too!!

  • He might be frustrated I don’t think it’s an unusual response but if you think it’s over the top and the above strategies don’t work maybe see your GP.

  • I would have a chat with him next time it happens. See if you can get to the bottom of it. Some professionals say swearing and carrying on after hurting yourself helps to relieve the pain

  • Maybe sit down with him later and ask him why he is angry. Is he angry with himself ? Is he wanting to cry, but believes he shouldn’t ? Is he angry about something completely unrelated, but the pain somehow gives him permission to express anger? If pain is all encompassing it can make people have a shorter fuse than normal.
