Hello!

my 16 month old is needing medicated eye drops and it is a FIGHT to get them in! Does anyone have tips to make it easier?

  • do it when he/she is asleep. i would do this really quickly and they would wake up and blink them in.

  • It’s easier if you can get someone to help hold them still.

  • When he is in sleep put drops in his eyes at that time

  • it’s always going to be a fight… the best you can do is talk to them about WHY it needs to be done..

  • Just give them time to prepare/understand them let know they need to do it I like the previous answer also

  • Let them know it’s important give them time to be persuaded be persistent if need be

  • my friend kneels down on the floor and puts bub’s head between her legs and has their eyes closed, pops the drops on the corner of the eye and lets them open their eyes. Drops are in no mess no fuss!

  • Your pharmacist may have some ideas that they have been told about by others or learnt during their studies required to become a qualified pharmacist. It is surprising how much medical knowledge they have. Sometimes they seem to know more about some medications than the GPs do.

  • I am pretty sure its job for 2 people. Someone who can distract and hold and other who is quick to do it. Good luck

  • I found it impossible for me to do but my son let my husband do it easy. I think his calmness may have helped.

  • I used to find it often worked putting the drops in the corners of their eyes and then getting them to play open shut them multiple times while I sang and the drops would run into the rest of the eye.

  • We always do it with the 2 of us and have our daughter laying on her back holding her hands, singing songs and doing funny, while the other uses one hand to keep the eye lid open and the other hand to apply the drops. It is a pain though. It’s just one of those things what needs to happen -like taking bloods or injections, clipping nails and washing hair- what can be very upsetting to our children. An attitude of understanding, a calm approach and cuddles is of course something to recommend.

  • Are you able to have someone stand off to one side and distract him?

Sometimes if they are not looking directly into the side of the eye where you are about to put the drop it helps. I learnt through trial and error with my eldest to hold their eye open from time to time when drops were not required, to get mine used to their eyes being “touched”

  • You can purchase special eye drop dispensers. Also I would suggest you google as there are heaps of tips and tricks that help frustrated parents.
