Hello!

Any tips on how to stop the squealing? My 15 mth old son loves to squeal & has been doing it for the past 5 mths or more. It’s a high pitch squeal that can last for a few minutes or can go on for hours and hours longest 8 hours with ten min breaks in between for a whole entire week. Tried using a time out area doesn’t work gets louder, talking to him doesn’t work, a tap on the hand (I know not right) doesn’t work, distracting him only works for a few minutes and he starts again. He does it when he is eating, playing, having a drink/bottle, when I leave the room, cook dinner, in the bath anytime, any place. It’s not a hurt squeal, it’s I found my voice and I can do high pitched squeal. Not sure if it’s an attention thing as I try to give him as much attention as I can but just losing my patience.

  • How did you go? Was it just a phase?

  • Has he stopped doing this?

  • I agree with MICHELLE CLARK check out the hearing of the child. Does the child suffer from anxiety. Does the child have any speech problems. Can the child speak a few words. Try having the child copy animal sounds. Play animal sounds when the squealing starts. If the child needs distraction give him a bubble bath with lots of toys. Try other distractions like a high pitch whistle don’t let him see you have it. Play what was that noise go looking for that sound. He will get over it you just have to be creative.

  • Has any advice helped to stop the squealing?

  • try teaching him a new noise to use instead of the squeal

  • how did it turn out?

  • Hope you managed to find some ideas that have helped.

  • Is he still doing it?

  • What did you end up doing?

  • I don’t have any tips for the squealing as my 6 year old still does it at times.

  • I hope you find the answers you need

  • My son does this, he particularly likes doing it in the bathroom-better acoustics in there I think. I think he just likes the sound of it.

  • Wanted to know aswell, thanks for posting.

  • Hope the tips by the other mums are useful to you

  • Talk to your hold health nurse or gp. There maybe something very simple

  • Get him checked by gp/pediatrition. It cod be his hearing or a symptom is something else. It could also just be an attention thing. Try ignoring it (I know it’s very hard when it’s constant) but sometimes if they get ANY kind of response it gives them encouragement to continue. Good luck with finding an answer

  • She has not changed much since then!

  • All I can say is nick it in the butt now!my 5 yr old did that too when younger and had no inside voice and cannot stop talking its a constant battle to get silence or stop high pitch whinging! She still sleeps in our bed most nights from me not wanting to hear that high pitch whinging at 2am so now we suffer lol

  • I say inside voice please people are sleeping. (All day)

  • Omg my 22 month old does this as well it’s very irritating and really the only way which is very bad parenting to give him what he wants just to keep him quiet :( especially in a supermarket
