Hello!

My 18th old son is between needing a day time sleep and waiting on. He gets very canky and upset if he does not have one. Any tips on helping me through this change?

  • I see this is an old question and most likely not an issue anymore :)

  • Why don’t you just let him keep having a daytime sleep until he doesn’t get tired and cranky without one? My kids were around 3 when they stopped daytime naps. Or you could try shorter day sleeps, making them shorter and shorter til it’s gone

  • Try and make the first sleep last as long as you can

  • He won’t grow out of day sleeps until he is 4 maybe… so just put him down after lunch while he still needs it. It gives you some time to yourself

  • i would still give him one or put him 2 bed earlier

  • there are some good comments here

  • early naps might help :)

  • My son just adjusted naturally and started to stay awake longer and just have one big nap rather than two small ones. You might find your bun will just change patterns soon

  • I will just let him nap earlier in the day.

  • Hope you have had some success

  • Fingers crossed hes made the transition now

  • Have you had any luck?

  • hope you managed to cut down to one nap without to much pain. going by my older kids there is usually a few weeks before they get used to it. it also took about 6 weeks for the one nap to lengthen as well

  • how is it all going?

  • My little one is now anti nap and often overtired. It is not fun but I usually create a quiet time late in the afternoon for her to have a nap and it seems to be working… for now

  • How is it all going?

  • i hope it all worked out :)

  • My son was always a good two nap sleeper until about 14 months. He/We then gradually began extending his days by half an hour (so instead of going for his morning sleep at 10, we extended it to 10:30, 11 etc) and would often put him to bed at night slightly earlier if he was tired. Now we have moved his lunch forward to 11:30 and he goes to bed at 12:15 most days and is up by about 3. He goes to bed at night around 7:30 and this has been the routine for the past couple of months! Good luck, it’s a tricky transition, but worth it in the end :-)

  • We extended the time our 18 month old was up in the morning by a bit each day. She’s up between 6.30-7am, goes for a nap at around 10.30-11am & sleeps for two hours then goes to bed between 7-7.30pm

  • Try and put him down in between the two times he was having his naps. So if he slept at 10am and 2pm but him down at 12pm. It might be a bit hit and miss but that worked for me. Also I found having 1 day of 2 sleeps and the next having 1 sometimes works to start with.
