Hello!

My son is 2 and he is an excellent eater. He loves all fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice- you name it he’ll eat it.. Except meat, he won’t eat mince, chicken, sausages, steak anything! I know im blessed with a child who loves his fruit and veg but the fact he won’t eat any meat at all has me worried. I give him those gummy vitamins with iron in them to make sure he gets all the nutrients he needs, but I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get him to eat meat. Thanks in advance :)

  • meat is such an acquired taste, i started out young with my 3 yr old and he will eat any meat i offer except seafood – hoping my daughter is the same!

  • I mince up red meat and use in as many dishes as possible as my toddler will not eat red meat. I think as long as they are getting their dose of iron it is ok.

  • Really very interesting reading the comments on this!

  • My daughter is 16 months and she doesnt like meat except mince but she used to

  • My daughter won’t eat much meat either, don’t think it does them much harm, they actually seem to eat more than we think too!

  • My little girl wouldn’t eat any meat for a long time too but she will eat salmon (no other fish). She is now 5yo and just started to eat chicken, maybe your son need bit more time? Just keep offering to him, but don’t force it. If you force it he may turn away forever.

  • Smell, thick texture. Have you tried small pieces of cold meats on a small plate. Like shaved beef or turkey from deli.

  • Lots of kids don’t like the texture of meat. Try fish, it’s often softer and easier to digest. If your toddler is eating green vegetables then he’ll be getting more iron from that than he would be from meat anyway. I wouldn’t worry too much, many families raise their children from birth as vegetarians.

  • Could relate to the texture of meat. Perhaps slowcooked and super soft would be palatable for him.Having said that, when my daughter was little she would only eat meat slathered with tomato sauce.

  • My daughter does the exact same. She will only eat small parts of mince meat in pasta. But any bbq meat, or chicken, she won’t go near it.

  • try making grill chicken/fish fingers?

  • try mixing it it other foods

  • there are some good comments here

  • could you put it in a sausage roll

  • It might just be the consistency of the meat.

  • kids are like that, try pasta and cheese with only a little mince sauce added, when he sees his friends enjoying it he may want to try it. Cut the sausages up and only give him a couple of pieces at a time. Maybe home made sausage rolls. Good luck,

  • my son was like that and well he still is…. he use to love all fruits and veg. but now he will only eat bananas, vegies he will eat but not as much. so i hide them. meat…….. he will eat mince if its in shep pie. but the only meat he will eat is white meat or fish. we talked to the dietician about it and they said it is because its harder to chew. have you tryed to make it in to like a puree and mash it in with potatoes? coule be a option. that way its not so noticable. i have tryed that and my son eats it. also if you want to make it a bit more yummy add some cheese and a tiny bit of sour cream or garlic oil. good luck

  • at 2 our son lived on peanut butter sandwiches and lots of milk. they go thru phrases. He will eat anything now.

  • how about fish? I think fish is also a good source of iron.

  • I think your son just need more time to learn eat meat. Not worry to much.
