Hello!

I am wanting to put my 14month old into a bed. Any tips on how to keep him in bed? I’m scared he might fall out.

  • A bed rail is the safest option, but as an alternative, a pool noodle or two/three elastic-banded together and placed under the fitted sheet can stop any rolling out providing they aren’t an ‘active’ sleeper. Some bed rails are able to be folded up and are great for taking with you when travelling, so look for this feature if buying.

  • I would wait until at least 2 yo!

  • way too early wait until they are 2 or more

  • There are bed rails that you can buy to prevent them falling out.

  • there are some good comments here

  • so many good tips …. How is he going now?

  • Some good advice there below.

  • pillows on the bed will give him a sense of security. Pillows or a doona on the floor beside the bed just in case he still rolls off the bed.

  • You can get a little net rail that tucks under the mattress. A pool noodle under the bottom sheet or under the mattress edge or a pillow helps. If you are still concerned put a big cushion on the floor.

  • Just pop a spare pillow under the mattress near the edge to form a rise so he rolls back into the middle.

  • Put a pool noodle under the sheet on the side of the bed that isn’t against the wall. This stops them falling out. Also make a bid deal of it and read a special book, new teddy and maybe even a night light. Nothing will keep them in bed (cots were great until they get big enough to climb out 12mths for me) unless they want to be there. Mine are 5 and 7 now and are always coming out for a drink, cuddle, kiss etc. But generally ok.

  • We have just moved out of toddler bed into single. First night he fell out onto large do on a and pillows. Second night I placed a pool noodle under fitted sheet and we haven’t had any issues. Good luck with it.

  • I have just moved my nearlly 2 year old into his first bed. I brought a toddler bed, its close to the ground and fits his cot mattress. (BigW). I have rolled up a towel and placed it under the fitted sheet just incase he rolls, havent had a problem yet.

  • you can get toddler beds which are low to the ground, only the size of a cot mattress and have a small rail on both sides but allow access for your child at the foot of the bed. I used these for my kids before moving them to a standard single at 2.

  • I know many peopke who change to toddler beds with a rail at 12 month’s dus to their babies climbing out of the cots. I’m not much help on this though, I know my 15 month old is not ready for a bed. She would end up on the floor, she is also only just starting to walk though. If you are worried maybe it’s not time yet.

  • We first changed the multi stage cot into a bed but found it to be too high. So we bought another mattress to put on the carpet floor as ‘padding’ in case LO falls off the bed. However, we were still worried such configuration may be unsafe. So, to have peace of mind, we bought a single bed that is lower to ground and with the safety side bar.
Hope you’ll find a solution that suits you. :)

  • maybe getting a toddler bed as they are small and close to the ground. otherwise maybe wait if possible 14 months is still young :)

  • I just put my son in his own room and bed (29 months) I let him fall asleep with me on the couch then move him in his bed (a mickey mouse toddler bed $90 from toys r us) and he sleeps all night, comes into my bed at 7:30am for an extra hours sleep and cuddles.. I leave the hallway light on, his bedroomdoor open and my door cracked so he can get in. Good luck hope this helped :)

  • I would worry that 14 months is too young for a bed. Also if you choose a bed rail, choose carefully as they can be dangerous if the child gets caught between it and the mattress.

  • Just have a bed rail.
