Hello!

My daughter got a new puppy last weekend. She has moved out of home and already has another dog. Her existing dog is obsessed with the ball to the point that that is all it does. When you visit, its throwing the ball the entire time your there. I would love to suggest another talent for this new puppy, any suggestions?

  • All dogs are different with their own personality. It may end up you have nothing to worry about considering this. Or it could be that they just follow the older dogs lead, but I doubt it. Try buying them their ow, unique toy. I’m a bit worried the other dog may have ‘issues’ as it seems to be overly obsessed with a ball

  • There are soooo many options, just keep active!!

  • depending on the type of dog it might be suited to dog sports

  • useful ones are sit and stay :)

  • Just stay with the basics, sit, stay, roll etc. One you have these sorted then try some other ones like beg, leave etc.

  • just some basic ones first like sit and catch

  • there are some good comments here

  • I would recommend puppy school.

  • The smacko dog treats you buy from the supermarket have tricks to teach them on the back, I also recommend puppy school for more training and also to socialize the puppy.

  • My husband taught our dog to fetch beer from the fridge on command, cute and useful :)

  • Puppy schools are great. They give you a look into so much more and its certainly worth the costs etc

  • Teach play soccer or take to puppy schools

  • I’d be tempted to take it to puppy school!

For the existing dog, what about some kind of tetherball so the dog can still play without you having to the throw the ball all the time? You can also get dog Frisbees, tug or war toys that are great for their teeth.

  • the sky is the limit for things you can teach a puppy. From the basic sit, shake, hi five, roll over, stay, then once that is mastered you can go for the more complex tricks.

  • fetch, drop, paws and high 5

  • Sit, stay & come are good commands to teach if the ball game gets to much for the humans!

  • Contact a qualified dog obedience trainer… That way that can learn the right way to do things right from the word go :)

  • Try using the dogs obsession with the ball to train other tricks, like find the ball or fetch, maybe you could even teach the dog to fetch other items down the track.

  • Sit , lay down , roll over , come ,not shaking hands, get me a beer, play the piano,

  • there are so many things a dog can do, one not to teach it or let it do is dig argggghhh can be a pain fixing up those flower beds :)
