Hello!

I try and do my nails as I can’t afford to have them done professionally. I used to bite them so getting my nails done is beneficial for me. The main problem is that after I paint my nails with acrylic it peels off. I feel its a waste of time.

Do you have any tips for acrylic nails?

  • Are you buffing them enough? They need to be a bit rough so that the acrylic sticks to them.
If you’re strapped for cash try and find a place where they have students learning. You’ll only pay 5 bucks and then you’ll get to see how it’s done.

  • Are you roughing them up with a file before putting the acrylic on? I’ve heard that helps

  • Are you doing it correctly? Is there something you should be putting on the nails to help the acrylic stick?

  • Save your money, only vanish for special occasion and leave clear rest of time. The health reports on nail salons scared me.

  • have you tried using a different brand of varnish?

  • I’m not a big fan of having nails done but that’s just personal choice. Speak to the store where you buy your nail polish etc and see what they recommend. You can also take vitamins to help strengthen your nails and make them healthier.

  • Try growing your own. Buy FABERGE CERAMIC GLAZE 15ML ($10), from any good chemist. Paint on two to three coats. Then one to two of any colour nail varnish. Then two more coats of FABERGE CERAMIC GLAZE. I find that painting the underside of my nail as they grow I have good strong nails. I paint 1-3 coats over a couple of days. You will be very happy with the results. I’m sure your nails will grow and you will be amazed.

  • I am not a huge fan of getting my nails done at a salon, but I do love girls days at home for nail pampering. Fun times and laughs!

  • Having been a nail biter for most of my life, I’m proud to say I have managed to keep them at a neat length & I apply weekly nail polish I won on here named Ulta3 & it lasts without chipping!

  • Maybe see if you could get a lesson from a friend.

  • I am not a huge fan of having ‘nails done’. I just keep them short and filed with a clear coat of varnish to protect them from chipping.

  • Whatever you do do not use acrylic on your nails. Eventually they will cause harm! I know 3 beauticians and they all agree acrylic is a no no!. I use Revitanail keratin strengthening serum and Sally Hansen’s Diamond shine which is a base and top coat all in one.. You can use a coloured polish like Revlon or Avon then put the diamond shine on top! it is very good!

  • I use the new Revlon gel look nail varnish. I really like it.

  • Use a good reliable brand and use a top coat

  • oh yeah we have a place near us that do them for $20 so maybe you could treat yourself! There is a lady on this site who posts in the craft section. She does nails and is really good. Maybe pop over there and find one of her posts and ask her this question. Good Luck

  • I know it could be a long shot, but why not try booking in with TAFE to get your nails done properly by students? (They would explain what I mean properly). Some charge between 10-25 for proper acrylic.

  • make sure that they are clean. buff them to make them smooth and it will help the acrylic stick

  • Best of luck! At home acrylic didn’t work for me either. I found Shellac was helpful in me not biting my nails – I don’t know why – maybe I subconsciously didn’t want to ruin the shininess? : P
