Hello!

My daughter is in year 9 and will soon be 15. She would like a laptop for her birthday and I would like one that she can use now and also in year 11 and 12 and possibly Uni. I’d love some suggestions from all price ranges please as we will have some school kids bonus money to add to it.

  • What will your daughter be doing on it other than school work? eg gaming, watching TV etc. Thinking about this will help you identify the features you need, and that’ll probably narrow your options down.

  • I quite like Lenovo, they are reliable and not too expensive.

  • Dell is also a good brand.

  • We bought our daughter a Toshiba for high school. It seems to be working out well for her.

  • I think apple but their a lot of them out there!

  • Macs and dells are always a winner in my house.

  • Mac’s seem to be the most popular

  • i asked my tech enthusiast mate and he reckons that you should spend the extra money and get a top of the range laptop as they have better “stuff” on the inside and will still be better for up-grading later on. He also suggested that if having a desktop was not an issue get one as they can be up-graded as well and you can have better specs on it than a laptop. i understand that a laptop is what she needs for her classes though

  • I would see what is compatible with the ones at school. Our school uses apple and so we have same at home and things can easily be moved and viewed between them. Nothing more annoying g than bringing your assignment home on USB and then u can’t open it!

  • Also, make sure it can fit into a strong and sturdy bag too. Make sure the bag is stylish too!

  • What about an iPad? That seems to be what all the kids are using at schools?

  • LOL! One that is indestructible! I would suggest going into shops and having a ‘test drive’ with some computers.

  • well i bought a top of the range acer and it was great! My toddler was being silly and jumped next to me on the bed and kicked the laptop and the screen went black! I suppose that i could have fixed it but i went and bought an asus because there was a deal going that you get a free tablet with it. It works fine but keeps disconnecting from the net (app it can be fixed). The laptop wouldn’t charge so sent it in to get looked at and it was the cord that was wrecked so got a free replacement as it is under warranty. It is a great price around $700 but just had these little issues. Apple ones look great but i highly suggest that you shop around and keep an eye out for specials. Have a play with them at the shop and ask the store people for ideas on
    – what sells the best
    – what they think is good value for money

And don’t be afraid to talk to a 2nd shop assistant for their opinion.

A lot of sales people (i would love to say what stores!!) they will try to sell you the most expensive models as they get a commission but you don’t need to spend the most money to get a great product. See what you both like and google user reviews.

I would buy another acer for sure! I had mine for 4 years and never had an issue with it. Your laptop needs to be of a certain “quality” so you will be able to up-grade the operating system in the future. your daughter will probably like to keep up-to-date if this will be used for uni. Go for the higher end of the range and this will accommodate for up-grading.
