Hello!

“I was wondering if I could put forward a question in regards to a new bed for my 6 year old. She is very tall and growing – tallest in her Grade 1 class. I have been looking around for a King Single bed but another mum I spoke to suggested that I just look at a Double bed instead. I don’t think she is old enough. What do other mums think?” What bed size is better for a child?

  • My kids all have queen sized beds (apart from my 2yo) Its so much easier to have sheets in the same size etc and they love being able to stretch out and spread all their toys out on it. Plus its also super handy if you have guests stay. as you can pop two kids in the one bed and have a spare bed for your guests.

  • At 6 years old I would go double size. Saves having to upside again in a couple of years anyways

  • My kids had a bassinet, then to a cot, then to a single bed. They were all sufficient fir them. When they moved out, they got double beds. No reason why a 6 yo can’t cope in a standard single bed,ms he can’t be too tall for it!

  • our little one has a double bed with a single bed on top in a bunk bed style. I wouldn’t go a king single as they are expensive to buy sheets for.

  • King single is big enough, it will depend On The size of the room too, a double would be nice if you can fit it ok.

  • What size did you end up getting?

  • My daughter was 8 when she moved to a queen sized bed

  • What did you end up getting?

  • Both my boys have double beds because they are more roomy and the kids won’t outgrow them as the years pass .You might have to replace the mattress in years to come.I buy the best mattress we can afford. As they get older just update the Doona cover to suit their age.Another option is a bed with a desk underneath i did have one of these but the child didn’t like it because it shook a bit and was to high for their liking.Make sure your child dosen’t mind sleeping high before the purchase.Happy shopping

  • Thanks heaps ! Wondering this myself.

  • Freedom have some great specials on kids beds . :). I would choose a double bed .

  • I hope you managed to make a decision. I would have gone the double myself :)

  • I would go for the double! Even if she has friends over they can share the bed

  • my kids are going to be tall, so we went with king single.

  • I think a double bed is great. Every now and them my daughter is scared I can jump in bed with her and we can both sleep easily.
And when she gets older she will want a bigger bed.

  • I wish id been bought a double at that age, i was a tall girl (172cm now) and i would much rather have too much space than not enough! A good night’s sleep is important so find something that she is comfy in!

  • We got our very tall girl a double when she was about 8 and it’s great for her :)

  • double bed means you can use her room as a quest room too. Many children’s bedding come in Double bed size. She can have sleepovers.

  • The linen for a king single is expensive I think. We have single beds for our very tall boys but with double bed doonas.i would consider a double bed for your daughter though, I know of lots of people whose young children ave double beds. I baulked at the idea, but it makes sense long term.

  • if it was me i would just get a king single as im pretty sure thst would give her enough room. i double bed would br too much room if i ask me.
