Hello!

With my youngest off to school soon, I’d love to look into a career change but it also needs to suit school hours. My background is in admin. Any suggestions?

  • I’d love to have a career change too

  • When my son was born I was desperate not to return to work from maternity leave as I wanted to spend as much time with him as possible. I started a little side hustle that grew into a huge business which I was able to run from home. I did this for 17 years which also enabled me to be a home when my daughter was born as well. if you have a passion for something, perhaps it could be turned into a business idea? It is a shed load of hard work……..but totally worth it.

  • It is so tough! I have found working from home the best fit for me. I was working full time in the office for a few years but it was impossible with my son in school.

  • You sound like me. My background is also admin, but I managed to find a job that was just during school hours and has been very accommodating around my time with my 4 year old. I work doing stock control/processing, pretty much. It’s nice having a job that fits around family time.

  • School admin? Or possibly a teachers aide? Disability support are also pretty flexible with hours or maybe you could do data entry or become a virtual assistant from home?

  • Hi lovely,
You can try looking for jobs from online platforms like Upwork – there are a lot of admin-related jobs you can find there and some are flexible hours too. I’m a mum of 2 and pregnant with our 3rd child. I’ve been working at home through Upwork as a Virtual Assistant since I had my first child and it has worked really well for us!

  • There are lots of flexible admin jobs if you still want to do that. Look at doing admin in industries you love so it’s sustainable and enjoyable

  • There are a lot of work from home admin jobs going

  • School admin or a home business where you can work your own hours.

  • My best advice would be to follow your passion. When you are doing work that feels meaningful and you enjoy life is happier. If you love admin work find some part time doing that. If you want a change try doing some micro courses online to see if you like it. Open Universities have lots of taster courses to try.

  • I dont speak from experience, but i do have friends who are teachers and it seems to work amazing for them having all the same holidays off!

  • My dil switched from childcare to kindergarten when my grandson started school. So she has school holidays off, which is awesome. She still uses before and after school care, but only for an hour each day. Or admin at a school

  • I think that working as a school admin at the same school as your youngest is a great idea. ????

  • I think anything you enjoy. Many jobs can be done part time or via job share.

  • A business you can run from your home office at the times you want. Buying and selling; Blogging; Some companies are running Call Centres from people’s homes (I am sure Coles are doing this).

  • I have noticed lots of cleaning jobs offered in my local area that are during school hours. Also, if you’re looking for a career change, aged care are desperate for workers! Some places will help with the cost of getting your certificate and many places offer flexible hours.

  • There may be local admin type jobs in your area that support flexible hours during school times?

  • There’s no right or wrong answer. Do whatever makes you happy really

  • My daughter has an admin job. Her employer has allowed her to set hours that suit. She likes to avoid early morning traffic, so she starts earlier then others. After a few months there, she thought an rdo might be nice. So now she works an hour or so more each day so she can have every 2nd Friday off. I think it comes down to not only the job you choose but also how flexible your boss will be

  • When my kids started school I got a job waitressing at night. That way my ex was home and he could put them to bed. I wouldn’t get home till nearly midnight, then up again at 5am went picking tomatoes and when finished there around 11am I would go to our spray painting, panel beating business and work there for an hour or two. So I had a full plate. P,us, I started netball in my area because the only netball was about 1 1/2 hrs away and a learning group too. I don’t know where I found the time. I look back in amazement at what I accomplished in that time. Find something you like to do and see how you go. My daughter does yoga and massage and Aryvedic medicine.
