Hello!

I have been told that there are certain cuts of beef that are better than others when cooking with a slow cooker. Which ones are they?

What is a good cut of beef that I can use in a slow cooker?

  • I’ve seen lots of yummy recipes on tv shows using beef cheeks. They just melt and fall apart when cooked right

  • I use Chuck or osso buco

  • Beef cheeks are great. Basically, the ‘cheaper’ cuts of meat are more suited to slow cooking. Not sure there are any cheap cuts nowadays

  • Corned beef is yummy. As are beef cheeks and even pork belly. It all comes out moist and tender

  • I’ve always used chuck or round steak cut into cubes.

  • A lot of people have told me to use gravy beef or chuck steak which is mentioned a lot in recipes too. The best thing is that these cuts of meat are cheap and is budget friendly .

  • Beef cheeks are divine. Chuck and round are good too. I do corned beef in the slow cooker, and oh my god, it’s the best ever. Anything you casserole in the oven, is better in the slow cooker

  • cheaper cuts of meat are the best for slow cookers.
beef the best cuts are chuck steak, gravy beef, shins, roast beef works well too.
Rump can be used but its best to not cook it longer then 4 hours on low as i found any longer and it starts to go dry and tough.

stay away from cuts like porterhouse steak, scotch fillet and really any expensive cut.

  • i hope that you are trying these ideas out and loving them!

  • Depending on what you want to cook, I like oyster blade steak as it breaks down and has a lot of flavour, ossobucco , beef cheek. I don’t normally cook topside roast as it shrinks too much and I have overcooked it although I did do a topside as a pulled beef, but it had loads of vegies and rendered stock.

  • We usually just use a side of rump – super cheap but not as salty as Silverside.

  • Pickled pork, corned beef, bolar beef for a large piece or chuck steak for stew all favourites in our house.

  • that’s the thing about slowcookers you can get the tougher cuts that have more flavour and they still turn out tender but much much more tasty. the best i have tried has been cheek.
coz cows are constantly chewing the cheeks do a lot of work which makes them tough but much more flavourful, perfect for a slowcooker.

other good ones are oxtail, tongue and chuck.

  • well that is the beauty of having a slow cooker! you can buy cheap cuts and make huge, lovely meals from that. i will buy chuck or blade and they are fine and yummy to use and around $5 for a kilo from my local butcher. i see that my local supermarket sells slow cook beef but doesn’t say what type of meat it is lol.

  • There is / was also a beef product called bolar roast which needs to be cooked slowly.

  • stewing stech chuck steamk are a good ones to use as they need to be cooked slow to get the best taste out of the

  • Chuck Steak, Pickled Pork, Corned Silverside, Ox Tail, Shin Meat, Skirt Steak, Ox Tongue ( after cooking peel off the skin), slice also great as cold meat. Lamb Shanks are great. Any meat that is considered tough will cook to really soft in a slow cooker. Skim off the fat, Bread will soak up fats. With some you may like to add part way through vegetables for a casserole. OX tail add veg to make ox tail soup. Rolled Roasts make a great pot roast.

  • I use pot roast it’s perfect and a cheap cut so can cook till tender for a long time

  • Skirt Steak. It’s so good. I also use Chuck Steak, but, I do prefer Skirt Steak. Depending on what your wanting to cook. Also, ask your Butcher if there’s one they recommend for cooking with slow cookers. Sometimes, one batch may not be as good as another they have in. Good question :)
