A labrador retriever is a great companion.

You can get puppies from rescue centers. Have a look on “pet rescue” website.
nd there isn’t one breed that is great for children it depends on your family and what breed suits your families needs.
We are a massive English staffy lovers in my house hold and would never get any other breed. But that’s what works for our family. Others swear by other breeds.

Rescue shelters do have puppies as many dogs are still not de-sexed; the puppies are handed in to shelters. We have rescued puppies/dogs from shelters and they have become wonderful pets.

Before I gave in to having a dog I went to a website that asks lifestyle questions and based on our answers matched us with three suitable dog breeds.

One of the dog breeds was a Sharpei, we did further research and ended up buying one. I could go on and on about what fabulous family dogs they make and how loyal, protective and friendly they are, however that doesn’t mean a Sharpei would be suitable for your family.

My suggestion is, anyone wanting to buy a dog takes one of those lifestyle surveys to be matched with the right type of dog.

A rescue dog is a great idea but they can come with a baggage, although the shelters do a great job of screening for suitability first (both the dogs and the potential owners)

Labs tend to be the best around kids, once you get passed the “lets try and eat everything in sight” puppy stage!

A lot of rescue groups have puppies too. Check PetRescue.com.au and you can search for puppies in your area (you can search for age of dog).

We have a maltese terrier – small and easy to handle. Depends what space you have in your backyard – big dogs need a lot of space to run around.

Why not have a look at the shelters and see if you like any of the dogs or puppies there if not then I recommend a lab or a Staffy I grew up with staffys and they just love being around people.id say not to rush into it though and just keep looking for the right dog for your family,when you find the right one you’ll know.

I would get a rescue dog because they badly need homes…there is no reason why there cant be a dog under the christmas tree as apposed to a puppy. So I am with your husband. I had a great rescue dog who was wonderful with children and much easier than the puppy I got later (If I had my time again I would have gone another rescue). Rescues do come with guarantees that if they dont work you can take them back so they have another chance of being adopted.

we got our dog from the animal shelter , We had 11 happy years with her. She was put to sleep when she got cancer She was a collie cross .a very gentle dog

Poodle. Great for allergies. Does not leave hair everywhere….. Or Labrador , very placid and kid friendly
