Hello!

So since I found out out first born was a boy my in-laws have been buying him Hot Wheels cars to the point of buying him over 200. I asked for them to not give them to him until he was 3 years old which is still 1 year away as we also have a 3 month old and he is a little rough with toys like a lot of children are.
Over the weekend they gave him over 100 while I was busy with our 3 month old. Yes he was very excited but I don’t know what to do with them should I just give him a couple and put the rest away I’m grateful they have been doing this but a little annoyed at the same time.

  • Hot wheels are huge in our house too. We keep them in tubs, and usually rotate them – they play with a tub a time. Our kids are car-obsessed, so I have asked family to try and limit the amount of hot wheels presents here too, but the collection does seem to be getting bigger still.

  • If you’ve asked, they should really stop. My son from 6months onwards loved hot wheel cars. It’s great for them to learn how to use their hands and the cars are the perfect size. However, 300 sounds like it would take up a couple of 80L storage tubs?! Like where do they think they would go?

  • I saw a very clever idea the other day, get just a rubber bicycle tyre & place horizontal slates of timber inside the tyre to make shelves, them attach to a wall todisplay your collection until your child is old enough to play with them.

  • My 2yo has been loving his hotwheels cars since he was 19months old. He can’t get enough & bizarrely he knows each & every one of them. But i do store some away in a tub for him to play with at different times

  • Put them in a tub, and let him choose a couple at a time. this keeps things interesting and safe at the same time.

  • My 2 older boys loved their cars & couldn’t get enough, they had a car play mat & would spend hours enjoying them but also they knew they couldn’t play with them when their baby brother was having floor time. Kids need to understand they have to be protective of the baby right from the start.

  • This is bizarrely over the top. One thing I did was set up a child safety gate across my older child’s bedroom door: he knew that certain toys (like Lego) could only be played with if the gate was shut to keep his younger siblings out. This worked surprisingly well.

  • That’s a lot of cars for one kid! I’d give him a couple and put the rest away for later. And let whoever gave them to him know that you won’t give them to him until he’s 3.

  • I would give him some and put a lot away. They get lost and broken if you let them go outside and in sandpits etc. So you can replace as needed. I’ve also seen a cool storage idea with plastic pipe. I’ll try attach photo below.

  • We want to build a shelf in his room that has a little carpark for each of his cars if that makes sense lol

  • Wow.. that is a lot of cars!! Although I think we would have that many collected by my boys over the years.

  • We looooove Hot Wheels in our house! It is frustrating when you are overwhelmed with toys when you didn’t really ask for them, but take these as a blessing in disguise! I love the idea of sorting and ordering them as a learning tool, but they will also be a life saver when you need to attend to bub and #1 is needing something to play with.

  • Grand parents are there to spoil the child. Accept the gift of Hot Wheels and let the boy enjoy them. 100 cars can be played with and let the learning begin. Numbers, Colours and Model recognition will happen naturally. Line them up 1,2,3,4,5, count them out. Take one away now how many? Add a couple. What are the colours? Turn this into lots of fun. At the end of the day put them away in a toy bin/box /bucket just for the cars. He will learn this is a rule you like to see him putting the cars away. Have fun with your growing family with playing and learning….

  • My in-laws are compulsive collectors, so my husband & son both have tubs full of them too. My husband still has all his from when he was little & some of them a worth a bit now to collectors. We have a display case in the garage/man cave with some of their favourites but the rest are just packed away. I have re-gifted some of the newer ones to other little boys that don’t have a lot, especially the doubles. We have a box with about 15 that my son played with daily & if they got damaged or worn out we would replace them with some of the new ones.

  • Oh my goodness! What a lucky little boy he is.
I think just give him a few at a time. I don’t know that he would be able to play with that many at any given time plus it would be annoying to put them all away.

  • I would probably save some for the next weeks or months when you are busy with the 3 month old again. Well that’s what I do as miss 3 yo gets excited with net toys but excitement would probably last for just a couple of hours.

  • I would give a few at at time and rotate them, as others have said, but I would also consider either stashing the rest away to resell if they are collectable, in a few years’ time, or donating them. (Only because that’s a huge number of cars and you have already asked your in-laws to stop and they havent. Unless you have a mansion they are just more stuff to tidy up/slip on.)

  • use them to your advantage and bring one or a few out when you need them to work in your favour like trying to get something done.

  • I would give few and rotate them that he will not get bored.

  • Wow, that is so much ! I would probably store some away for when he’s older and when the remainder is still in the packets I would regive them on birthdays or donate them to the op shops
