Hello!

I am looking to start a vegetable garden for my daughter. I would love to hear what vegetables and herbs you have found to be the easiest to grow that don’t take up too much room or require a lot of maintenance. I only have a small area to use so quite limited. My daughter is 4 years old and really interested in gardening.

  • I grew a small patch of carrots with my kids. They loves the feel of the carrot tops and harvest time was really exciting and hands on for them

  • Peas and beans have been a quick producer for us, and they can be easily grown in pots. You may need to put some bamboo stakes or something in for them to grow against as beans tend to want a frame or wall to climb. But they grown within a few short weeks and then kids.get the fun of picking them. Strawberries are another good one for pots. We found we had to product them though as the ants, birds and slugs all loved them and ate the fruit for us!

  • Quick growing vegies
Snow peas radishes beans etc as kids need to see them growing to stay interested
Don’t forget to plant some flower too as they attract beneficial insect’s for pollination

  • We choose a number of different sized plants for variety. Some plants need staking and some are low growing.

  • Our kids have loved gardening this year. We have quite a huge garden but they’ve really enjoyed growing snow peas and beans. Also loved growing strawberries. Peas and beans are great because they grow upwards ties to stakes which is perfect

  • Maybe go with vegetables they like to eat. Interest in particular vegetable/s will make it a fun experience.

  • Lettuces, basil, tomatoes, parsley, potatoes, pumpkins, cucumber, peas and beans are all easy to grow. What a lovely activity to encourage :)

  • I think spinach & silverbeet are rather easy. And what about a cherry tomato plant ? Or some strawberry plants ?

  • Basil and dill are super easy to grow. Ours went crazy and they were only from the woolies pods!

  • Potatoes are super easy in the right soil. And useful now given the price of them.
