I would place stacked chairs inside and tables on their side until an adult is out there.

I think nothing beats supervision when the children are out on the deck.

A deck should have rails along it regardless of whether there are children or not. Adults can also have accidents.I don’t like the suggestion of throwing toys from on it. Children learn by example. You don’t want them throwing toys over and risking injuring somebody else and trying to retrieving them in too much hurry and hurting themselves. Injuries can occur with furniture whether it is heavy or light. Decks have steps onto them – another thing to consider safety. If you are going to have small children you need to consider the depth of the steps and put a safety gate at the bottom of it. Safety comes before appearance.

Hi I would just make sure they are supervised especially under the age of 5,let’s face it they would probably try climbing over even if there was no furniture as children can be monkeys as they love to climb

if able try and not leave your kids unsupervised

We will have the same issue once we’ve finished building the house. Our youngest will still be a toddler so for us we will prevent him from being out there unsupervised. We’re not paranoid but the extra stress is just not worth it. Trust yourself to know when the right time is for you to allow the kids unsupervised play time on the deck. It won’t be forever.

How old are your kids? I’d they are over 2 tell them it’s not safe, show them by throwing a toy off etc.. They Learn quickly

If you think your kids are the type to do that then make sure you have furniture thats weighted and impossible for them to move.
Or dont allow them on the deck unless there is an adult to keep an eye on them.
Or have fold up furniture that you remove and only put out when you need it and someone can watch the kids.

Use heavy chairs and tables and teach the kids not to move them, other than that someone will have to supervise when on the deck. Also if you are really worried a good lock on the door leading to the deck

my parents have a veranda that goes whole way around there house, they have chairs and tables out on two sides, ive never had a problem with my kids climbing or pushin furniture to climb. I can only suggest not allowin them on the deck unsupervised untill they are of an age where the understand danger

My Mum had the same. She built slats all the way to the roof on two sides so that made it more safe. We just made sure we could always see the little ones and furniture wasn’t anywhere near the edge. Good luck.

Can you prevent the kids from getting out there unsupervised? That might be a good rule, or a good use of child safety locks.

I would also only use heavy furniture if you really had to leave furniture outside.

I would suggest not leaving furniture out if you are concerned about it. Maybe only a heavy table and chairs that only come out when you are there to supervise.

Use heavy furniture that children can’t move. If you have safety concerns put a trellis board around the top of the deck, it can be taken down anytime and you can see through it.

Could try a fastening furniture to deck ,not always ,when kids get bit bigger change fixtures to suit age .
