Ever been stumped by your child’s sweet, innocent face as they try and pin a cheeky act on their sibling? One mum has discovered a brilliant way to tell if kids are telling the truth. And it’s so simple we wish we’d thought of it earlier.

The tip was posted in response to a TikTok asking mums to reveal the most useful lie they’ve ever told their kids. TikTok user Victoria then blew everyone’s mind when she detailed her simple tip.

“I told my children that when they lie, a star appears on their forehead, that only a grown-up can see,” she explained. “So anytime they’re lying to me, they cover their forehead.”

Genius! The video has had more than 20 million views from thankful parents. Other mums then took to the comments to share their useful parenting lies.

“Told my son that when the ice cream truck played music it meant they were out of ice cream.”

“My mum told me when I lie my ears turn pink so I would run around holding my ears.”

“We can’t be awake until the sun is awake.”

“My mum used to tell me if I ate my boogers I would turn into a tree. She said the tree outside was my brother.”

“My mum told me when I lie I grow a dog tail so I’d always look behind me.”

So, what’s the most useful lie you’ve ever told your kids?

  • How funny. And genius

  • Haha, these are all so funny. I can just tell when my son is lying. It’s a look on his face… and if I stare at him long enough questioning his lie, he breaks!

  • I some times telling them wrong time in the morning to wake them up early.

  • I’m sure I have, but I can’t for the life of me think of one! Santa, Easter bunny, tooth fairy etc be the biggest lies

  • If you know your kids, you’ll know when they’re lieing. I pick almost every time my step kids try and lie to me. God I was a kid once. Of id lie about it to a parent to cover my backside, then so will they. They don’t get much past me at all.

  • Yeah doesn’t this contradict what you are trying to tech your child not to do? I just try to talk to my kids about why they shouldn’t lie.

  • Funny! We used to be told things like that when we were kids but when we were old enough to understand that it wasn’t exactly true we didn’t think for a minute that our parents were lying.

  • Hmmm I don’t think my kids would believe that. And not sure if telling a lie to find out if my kids are lying sends the right message. You’re saying it’s wrong to lie by telling a lie.

    • It is not a method that we employ for so many reasons.

  • Amazingly brilliant

  • We don’t lie to our children to stop lying. We actually communicate and discuss issues.

  • Lol, I’ve never used these tricks but do know when my kids are lying anyway 🙂

  • So lie to your children to find out if they’re lying?
    What logic.
    Wonderful way to build trust.
Then when the children realise their parents lie to them?
This just reinforces that lying is fine if you’re the adult.
    Terrible advice

  • My gf used to tell her kids that their tongue would turn purple but only adults can see so they would keep their mouths shut if they were lying!

  • I am so going to try this on my youngest!

  • Some of those lies are really out there. Some of the best lies I was probably told as a kid were those that only bent the truth a little. But the one that stuck with me and I now make a joke with my kids about is that if you eat your crusts your hair will go curly!

  • Haha those lies are actually lit.

  • Mine are too young to use these yet. But I remember as a child my Nana telling me if I swallowed apple seeds, an apple tree would grow in my tummy. I dont know why it was such a big deal I’d I swallowed a seed while eating an apple. But there you go

  • And this works???

  • When I was really sick, a couple of Mums at school made evening meals for us for a couple of weeks – and suddenly my fussy kids would eat anything. So when I was well, I told the kids the Mums were still feeding us. Worked for a good couple of years.
