No matter if your kid is old enough to remember their birthday party or not, you want to throw them a spectacular party. After all, you will remember all of their birthdays and there will be plenty of photos and videos from the big day.

If you’re not sure where to start or how to organize the perfect birthday party, here are some essentials you cannot overlook.

Decide on how many guests you’re inviting

Start by deciding how many guests you will be inviting to the party. For example, if your kid is younger, you should consider inviting their entire kindergarten class. That way, no one’s feelings will be hurt. On the other hand, if your child is a bit older, you can only invite their closest friends or whoever they want to invite. Something else to keep in mind is whether you want the parents to stick around or not.

Pick the time and place

The next step should be deciding when and where the party will be held. In terms of the date, you want to pick a day when all key guests like your kid’s best friend and favourite aunt are available. Furthermore, you don’t want the party to start too late or too early, especially if you’re inviting young kids that have specific nap times. Of course, a non-school day is preferred. When it comes to the venue, you can do it at home or rent a place in case your home cannot accommodate the number of guests you are inviting.

Send out invites

Once you have the time and place, you can start sending out invites. Nowadays, you have a choice between digital evites and physical invites. While evites might be more practical and easier to send, you might want to have some mementos from the party. In that case, looking for party printables online  and finding invites you can easily print out and send to invitees is the way to go. There are thousands of designs for you to choose from so you can surely find one that your child likes.

Think of a theme that everyone would enjoy

If your kid is currently interested in something, you want to consider making it a theme for the party. Whether it’s a specific book, space, plants, or superheroes, you want to find a way to incorporate it into the celebration. It can be décor on the walls, birthday cake in the shape of their favourite superhero, costumes you set as dress code, motif on the invites, or something else. However, you also want to make sure you don’t overdo it as there might be confused guests that are not as familiar with the theme.

Start making food and drinks

While you can order food and drinks for the party, you can also make them on your own or with some help. For instance, if you are close to any of the parents that your child spends time with, you can ask them to help you out. Other than cake, you want to offer other sweet and savoury treats. Fortunately, from marshmallows dipped in chocolate to homemade pizza, recipes for a kids’ birthday party abound. Drinks that you could make are also countless but consider some mango or watermelon lemonade, blueberry milkshakes, or pineapple and lime mocktails. Make sure to always have water on hand as well. Finally, remember to ask for various dietary restrictions to ensure there are no food allergy incidents at the party.

Prepare various sources of entertainment

Lastly, you cannot forget about entertainment. Sure, your options might depend on how many guests you are inviting and where you are throwing the party but preparing a few sources of fun should not be difficult. For instance, you can hire a karaoke machine. Everyone who wants to sing can get a turn and those that don’t can simply enjoy others singing their hearts out. Then, you can hire a professional entertainer like a clown, puppeteer, or magician. Finally, you can try some activities like water balloon or water pistol battles, obstacle courses, hide and seek, scavenger hunts, musical chairs, or face painting.

As long as you start preparing and notifying guests on time, there is no reason to believe your kid’s birthday party won’t be a success. Just make sure there are tasty treats and fun games, and you are guaranteed a fun time.

  • I like to keep parties simple with not too many kids. Just some yummy snacks and a few best friends to hang out or see a movie.

  • I hosted an old fashioned birthday party for my daughter with games like pass the parcel, pin the tail on the giraffe (because my daughter likes giraffes), around the world (played outside), lots of party pies, sausage rolls, chips, lollies, and a large fruit platter. The children loved it, as did my daughter. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, children just like being together and having fun.

  • Simple can work – I did a movie party. Five kids in front of a DVD player, a movie so old none of them had seen it, and movie type snacks. Several of the invitees said it was the best party they’d ever been to.

    • I like simple and small too. Walking through the bush with a flash light, sleepover party in a tent in the backyard, watching a movie together…easy and always successful !

  • I love parties in parks – plenty of room for the kids to run around while the mums and dads organise the the food and chit chat!

  • I love my kids birthdays!! Currently struggling to think of what to do for my toddlers second birthday this year. Where we live is cold, July is freezing and we have limited indoor activities ???? the list above has helped me decide on a couple things like an Emma wiggle theme! Now just to find a location.

  • The best party was a combined BDparty of my son & daughter whilst they were in Kindy & yr 1. It was just a party in the park on a Saturday. I invited all class mates, their parents and siblings along so it was a massive party. Other than foods & drinks, face-paints and a manicure table, I didn’t organise much and just let it flow. It was lovely

  • My sons first birthday was a toy story party, last minute had to change venue (from the park to my nans) as it was going to rain. Everyone had a great time

  • I think the best birthday party is when the kids just have fun playing. They don’t have to be extravagant because they will expect it every time, which will just put more pressure on you

  • Kids parties can be fun but id rather take my kids to the zoo or somewhere that they want to go for their birthdays, it’s fun and you don’t have to really stress about organising too much.
