A mum says she believes 12-year-old children should be able to make decisions about their own hair, after she gave her son’s friend a dramatic haircut, without asking his parents’ permission.

The mum says her 12-year-old son and his best friend Aaron spent the day together, and she later asked her son if he wanted a ‘buzz’ his hair before his dad picked him up.

“I said I could do it while he and Aaron play video games,” she explained.

“When I was done with my son, I asked Aaron if he’d like to even out his bob. His hair was like Kurt Cobain’s. He said no because he was going to get it short like my son’s. I said I could do that instead. He said okay. I even let him put in some colour. I dropped him off a couple of hours later.”

Not long after, Aaron’s parents called, and they weren’t happy.

“Well his parents called me like they were excited. They asked why did I cut Aaron’s hair. I said I know right? You can now see his eyes.”

“They said no. I had no business cutting his hair. I said I was surprised because Aaron is way old enough to groom his hair. They said I should had asked. I said it’s hard to have a talk with people who think 12-year-old boys should get permission to style their hair.”

Now the mum wants to know if she was in the wrong for cutting the boy’s hair. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

  • I think kids should have whatever hair they like. However you still need to check with the parents. A quick phone call wouldn’t hurt. I am actually disgusted a parent would do that without checking with the child’s mum first. Absolutely that mum was in the wrong.

  • I would have checked with the parents first. He may be old enough to decide on what he wants done with his hair but still talk to parents first

  • Definitely should have checked with the parents first. All she had to do was pick up the phone.

  • While I agree that 12 year olds should have a say over their hair, I really don’t think she should have done this without checking with the other parents – because they may have a different view and he’s THEiR son.

  • 100% should’ve asked or checked in with parents. I’d be furious too!

  • 10000000%. Not your place. Should have checked with the parents. I would have been fuming.
