Let’s face it, lockdown birthdays can be a real bore but what if you could make them extra special with a virtual visit from some familiar faces…

In the grand scheme of things, missing a birthday celebration or two as a result of a lockdown with the aim of keeping us all safe doesn’t seem like a big deal. For younger kids, however, having birthday plans cancelled and being isolated from their friends can really put a dampener on the whole day.

Despite all the restrictions, some creative mums are making it their mission to keep lockdown birthdays as fun as possible, and when one of them shared Friend In Me’s incredible Virtual Parties with us, we just had to tell you all about them!

A Special Guest

With a Friend In Me Virtual Party, your little one will still be able to enjoy all the magic of having their favourite character present for their special day! Each booking includes a 15-minute live virtual party with a character of your child’s choosing, with lots of popular personalities to choose from.

You can also opt to up the game and have two characters join the virtual party, or arrange a pre-recorded video message which we think could be the perfect surprise for your child or even a special creative gift for one of their friends who is also struggling with the reality of lockdown birthdays!

Spreading Positivity

Friend In Me is about so much more than just making birthdays memorable. They are an important charity that advocates for social inclusion and acceptance in children through sensory-friendly events, workshops, and online programs.

Everything they do is founded on their core belief that no child will ever be left behind and we just love their commitment to providing a safe, socially inclusive community!

So if you’re looking for a way to make lockdown birthdays a little brighter while also supporting a wonderful cause, check out Friend In Me’s Virtual Party and get ready to put the biggest smile on some very excited faces.

  • Ask friends and family to facetime at various times during the day so there is constant activity. Fill your child’s room with balloons so they wake up to the excitement of their birthday. Include family in the birthday cake celebration on facetime. Have people drive by. Create a treasure hunt of birthday gifts with clues to find them. This will fill in some time and create a sense of fun and excitement.

  • Thats a really lovely idea. I am worried there will be a lockdown around my daughter’s first birthday but she’s too young for a virtual party so I’m going to take it as it comes.

  • Truthfully, I’m so bad at organising parties they usually happen a couple of months late anyway. My kids wouldn’t notice if a lockdown made their party late.

  • That sounds like a nice idea, I’m hoping I’ll finally avoid a lockdown birthday though.

  • Living in Victoria we unfortunately have had many lockdown birthdays and found them to be really heartbreaking for my kids and nieces. We posted and organised for the gifts to be sent to our family.

  • A video call from a dear friend or loved family member certainly can make your day. A gift per post on the special day can be lifting the spirit too. But we usually celebrate it just within our family and we can still do something special on the bday

  • We just celebrated our youngest’s first birthday. We managed to have a small party on the Saturday, then she celebrated her first birthday during a lock down. It didn’t matter so much to her, or us. But I guess older children and others would find it upsetting, especially if they were locked down on their birthday last year also. But at the end of the day, so long as there’s cake, presents and the (immediate) family they will be disappointed but also happy!

  • My toddler was lucky enough to be able to celebrate her birthday at a party centre this year.
Last year when she turned 1 it was just the beginning of this whole thing and lockdown had just started. Unfortunately it was only 3 people allowed so I just made a cake, decorated the living room and bought a whole bunch of presents.
I guess am idea could be to go hunting for the presents just for fun!
