McDonald’s are handing out free Roald Dahl books with every happy meal box to inspire more children to enjoy reading.

The fast food giant is making 800,000 of the children’s books available in happy meals across New Zealand, as part of its Happy Meal Readers programme.

The books will feature extracts from Roald Dahl’s beloved books alongside illustrations by Quentin Blake.

The special books will be available in Happy Meals across New Zealand for the next six weeks, shares Daily Mail.

‘The Happy Meal Readers programme is all about helping parents to get their children to enjoy reading,’ said Jo Mitchell, director of marketing at McDonald’s New Zealand.

‘The Roald Dahl characters are ones that many parents will have enjoyed growing up, and it’s great to play a part in introducing them to a new generation.’

McDonald’s lovers in Australia don’t miss out on the books either, as the Happy Readers app is available to download and will ensure kids receive a free interactive book in their happy meal.

  • A fantastic idea that hopefully will arrive to Australia too. A book has a lot more value that the games they use to hand out.

  • This is such a better idea than those crappy toys kids seem to play with for 5 minutes then forget about them! Books are amazing!

  • I love these books and already own all of the Roald Dahl books I can get my hands on but my kid hates them, he wants crappy toys, we actually had a tanty over it today

  • Lets hope they introduce the books here too, better than junky and in some case dangerous toys.

  • My kids love reading! I wish here in Australia they bring the books out

  • I love the giving of books and hope this occurs in Australia too. Not every family and every child can access or use apps as every family situation is different. A soft cover book would make it accessible to everyone.

  • I love the new books and happy meal packaging it’s new different and educational the other toys were plastic and end up in the bin so this is better

  • It’s not free unless they reduce the price of the happy meal. However I love the idea of a book rather than a toy.

  • Wonderful idea. Not only will more children read books, but the books are not contributing to more rubbish toys ending up in landfill.

  • I wish they’d do this is Australia.

  • This is brilliant! We stopped buying happy meals because we hated the cheap plastic toys. Books are so much better. I know the extracts are to encourage people to go out and source the books themselves but I would be much happier with a complete story and different ones to collect for different age groups. But still, very excellent idea indeed. I hope every McDonald’s picks this up!

  • We had macdonalds the other day and my girls got a happy meal each and both were super impressed with the books and the fact that it was such a great author that they liked too – even though my girls are 12 and 8 both sat down and read the story they got after lunch and both were impressed that MacDonald’s had done something like this rather than toys we don’t even bother to open. We highly recommend they do this with maybe australian authors as a way of encouraging kids to write their own stories – maybe have it tie in with a writing competition to win some great australian books and of course happy meals!
