This mum says her mother-in-law believes she her six month old son is spoilt…..

A frustrated mum has taken to popular parenting forum Mumsnet to vent about her mother-in-law repeatedly saying she spoils her son. The mum says that she has been accused of giving her son too many privileges, with her mother-in-law suggesting that she is raising him in completely the wrong way…

Constant Comparisons

The new mum said that when her mother-in-law discovered she was enrolling her son in baby swimming classes and completing a baby massage course, the judgmental comments started. “Just venting really, but it’s so frustrating when my MIL constantly refers to my baby as spoilt,” she said. “She feels the need to compare to how she raised her own family, primarily that they didn’t have much because she couldn’t afford to give them more.” The mum said that the fact that her son is only six months old only makes the whole situation more ridiculous. “Having is not equal to being spoilt, it’s not like he’s remotely entitled… he’s a baby!” she wrote.

A Simple Misunderstanding?

Responses to the mum’s post were mixed, with some saying that the whole thing could be a simple misunderstanding. “My son gets called spoilt sometimes by nan and family,” wrote one mum. “I don’t really take offence to it, I take it as a compliment in a way because we do have lots to do and he is forever getting new little toys and bits.” Others were more understanding of the mum’s frustration, taking issue with the use of the word ‘spoilt’. “How annoying, you can’t possibly spoil a baby except with neglect,” one said. “Lots of people judge each others parenting , but most of us are polite enough to realise that we need to keep it to ourselves.”

The line between a child that is well cared for and a child that could be labelled ‘spoilt’ is often so fine that people resort to using the label even when it is uncalled for. We totally understand where this mum is coming from!

  • I can see how this can be annoying, but really why not just ignore it or discuss it with people you know instead of going to a forum to complain? In my opinion spoilt isn’t always a bad thing!

  • Parents will raise their kids the way they see fit. People need to keep their negative opinions to themselves. Tel MIL to back off!

  • I agree it’s near impossible to spoil a six month old.

  • Quite a strange remark indeed.
I remember one woman telling me that my daughter was spoilt when she was around 8-9 years old. Reason? We still read books with her every evening! This woman said that my daughter was big enought to read books alone by herself in the evening!!! Ha. Ha. She didn’t even deserve an answer of course!

  • How can a 6 month old be spoilt? Swimming lessons are for a skill everyone needs. Seems she’s jealous or just bitter.

  • I would be tempted to ask the MIL how her grandson is spoilt. Being spoilt is like buying a baby something like a toy every time you go shopping. A know a Grandma who bought her granddaughter a new toy or something else every time they went shopping together which was often once a week or even more often. She became a spoilt demanding child by the time she started school. She thew tantrums and didn’t want to go to school and told her Mum she didn’t want to go to school. She would miss out o n going shopping with Grandma. The child’s Mum was so desperate she went and asked for advice how best to handle the situation with her Mother who was elderly. She was an only child because of the Mum’s medical problems. The Mother of the child had a different medical problem so decided it was best not to have another child. Maybe that’s why the granddaughter got so spoilt

  • Don’t think you can spoil a 6 month old baby too much with love and attention.

  • I don’t know if the grandmother really means it in a negative way. I always ask my daughter if she has been spoilt when she returns from her grandparents.

  • Well lucky she’s the Grandma and not the Mum. she can stay away and mind her own business!

  • Six month olds are not spoilt its just a term people like to use when they disagree with what you’re doing.

  • I guess looking at it from the MIL’s point of view the term spoilt mean exactly that – you got everything you needed and wanted – back in her day probably that’s how it was viewed and if you came from a poorer family then you definitely thought those around you with more were spoilt kids.

In defence of the mother, i think having her child called spoilt because he is having baby swimming lessons – a necessity in this day and the mother did a baby massage course does not constitute spoilt – if the baby was being carried around in a luis vutton baby carrier wearing baby nikes and spotting designer clothing then that’s possibly a better time to pull out the spoilt word!

  • My husband’s Nan use to call my youngest spoilt. Used to bug me as she actually meant it

  • At six months of age you cannot call any child spoilt – they are loved and cherished.
