A mother has come under fire after revealing on TV that she doesn’t let her children have any sugar – not even birthday cake

One mother has spoken out about the dangers of children consuming sugar, during a debate on Good Morning Britain about obesity.

Nutritionist, Tonia Buxton, appeared on the show where she revealed that her own children were banned from eating sugary foods.

She went on to say that they weren’t even allowed to enjoy a slice of birthday cake at a party, shares The Mirror.

The mother-of-four argued that sweets are as addictive as cocaine and would only leave youngsters craving another “hit”.

She said: “Sugar has the same effect on the brain as cocaine. It’s a hit and once [children] have it, they go crazy, they’re running around. Then they come down and they want more.

“You’re better off not having any, and then having something that’s better for you.”

Tonia argued that in today’s society people no longer need to eat sugary foods to survive, as there were so many other healthy options.

  • If you don’t teach kids moderation and model self control when they go out into the real world they won’t have these skills.

  • The combination of fat and sugar is the real problem, and laboratory invented packaged “food”. Snacks are more addictive than a bit of cake, and you can make vegan sugar free cakes too as an option for those avoiding sugar or wheat free or dairy free, many options these days. The addiction from packaged food is because they find the umami that stimulates your reward centre in the brain so keeps you wanting more, that’s the addiction.

  • The problem goes deeper than granulated sugar. ALL carbohydrate is converted into sugar once eaten… especially wheat-based products and refined wheat is the worst… Carbohydrates are addictive! Full stop. The long-term health effects are destructive, as with cocaine. That bit of sugar in the cake is a problem BUT so is the wheat flour! Better off not to use wheat flour (there are alternatives that have more protein and less carbohydrate, like almond and coconut meal) and most certainly do not sweeten with extra granulated sugar!

  • I do not feel you have to eliminate sugar altogether.

  • Agreed sugar is addictive. Science has proven this.
I try my best to limit my children’s sugar consumption but it is everywhere!!!

  • I’m not sure that it has as bad an effect as cocaine but sugar does effect some kids quite strongly.

  • No birthday cake is a bit rough sugar in moderation!

  • Sugar is probably addictive and not good for you but not on comparison to cocaine.

  • Yep, sweet sugary things are addictive and sugar does damage to a person’s health. Not quite as bad as cocaine though

  • Yes sugar is highly addictive but I think it’s a bit far fetched to compare it to a cocaine addiction. Although she may be referring to how easy it is to become addicted to cocaine?
